Hello,
Quick question. Been looking for a S&W m58 lately (won't whine about current panic pricing, every knows it's pure insanity right now), but I was wondering what the board here though was a decent, real world price on one.

Thing is, I'm not looking for a collector grade safe queen, rather a good working example with really decent lock up. I don't care if the finish is total holster-worn and gone or it has years of handling marks. Deep gouges? Nah, that's a bit far, but a rough 60%-70%'er on the outside is fine.

As an example, about a few years ago one came up on Gunbroker, a San Antonio PD marked m58 that had the original wooden grips (one was broken and missing a chunk) and a finish that looked more like it'd gone through the Battle of the Somme rather than having only served on the streets with the River City's finest. Rough, but it was only $500. Wish I'd moved on it, but now examples like that are next to impossible to find.

So, just wanted to throw it out there and ask for opinions on the value of a model like that in the condition described. I've seen some very fine ones going for $1500 up to over $2000, but like I said, I'm looking more for a tacklebox gun with good internals, not a work of art.

What do you guys think such a beast is reasonably worth these days?

EDIT: I forgot to say, I wouldn't care if it was 4" or 6", but the one I'm thinking of would need to be a P&R model.

A descent 58 sold on this forum within the last 4 or 5 weeks for $800 as I recall and it should have been all original in very nice shape based on the pics. Someone got it before I could. I have one that is in descent shape and I wouldn't sell mine for that low a price. I'd say $1200. You say you'd take a 4 or 6". If you ever see a 6" pay a house mortgage price for it since none were ever made.

Glad you corrected me, I have a few m57's in 6" and just threw that in without thinking. Since the m58 was aimed at police as a duty revolver, there'd be little point in that. Good catch

You're going to love it. :D

My 58 is one of my few keepers.

I used to have a 520 too.

I thought they made great companions.
Both N-frame, 4" fixed sights and they were shipped with unique identical grips.

Then one day I figured I'd probably never shoot the 520 so I sold it.

My 58 is a shooter and is not for sale. :D

I bought mine about four years ago for $1100. It is in great condition, in the box. May not have been fired since the factory. It was a lot then, but they are rarely seen for sale in my area. I would hate to think what it would be listed for with the increase in prices lately.

$500 was too much .... you missed the boat .
The old ones haven't come down in price and my crystal ball says you should expect to pay twice that $500 amount and if you wait another year or two it will be more like 2.5 X 500 = $1250 .
Joes inflation policies are working well ... the price of ammo , gasoline , chicken , beef and most everything else are rising .
Inflation means you pay a lot more and get nothing extra for it ...but that's the plan that is set in motion .

I bought a blue one in 90% or better condition about a month ago. Had a set of target stocks on it rather than the PC magnas though. Anyway, I paid $1000 for it, and bought the correct grips off the classifieds here for like $50 or so.
They are out there but not common.
