S&W mod 1 2nd edition

Hi, New to this forum.I have this pistol and was wondering if anyone has ever seen this type of extraction rod.

Welcome to the Forum. Are you sure it is a S&W? Check the top of the barrel rib for additional information. If it is a Model 1, 2nd Issue, the silver plating has been totally removed from the brass frame and some type of long pin has been installed in the place of the shell remover. Let us know the serial number on the bottom of the butt frame.

As a guess; the revolver appears to be an American Standard copy of a Smith & Wesson. As stated above: What is on the top of the barrel? That should denote the manufacturer of the arm.

Humm, something doesn't add up correctly. The extractor rod is not Smith & Wesson. The serial number, if on the butt, is within the range of 1st Model, 2nd Issue. I think you may have a revolver that has been "upgraded" by a previous owner. Keep us updated.

You could very well have a S&W Model 1 with the changes as I noted above. Worn examples often show lots of brass where the silver was worn off and maybe a prior owner liked the look of polished brass rather than mottled silver/brass. Easy enough to remove all the silver. The ejector rod is often missing on Model 1s, since they were press fit into the brass frame, worked loose and fell out. Some ingenious owner could have added the stylish ejector rod at a much later date. It should be replaced by a replica of an original rod to make the gun look better.

I wonder how the ejector rod works ? from the pictures the instillation looks professional . Does the rod pull out and then use it to punch out the used shells as it can't push to the rear of the gun ?

Looks like it has to be removable. It has a brass guide in the front that was keyed into the barrel and maybe it screws into the frame and can be removed to push out spent casings and maybe push out lodged bullets. Maybe it doubles as a cleaning rod??

Yes it does remove to clear the shells.
