I just bought an unfired 66-2 with a 3" barrel, RR, WO. No box, and it came with the wrong grips (square butt target of all things, and yes it did look goofy). Gun was on consignment at a local shop. I already had a 66-3 3", and I like it so well, I thought another would be a good idea. We have a waiting period for used guns in the city where I bought it, so I have to wait until next week to pick it up. Timing and everything seems perfect and lock up is tight. Only burn marks on the cylinder are 3, every other one, on the cylinder face from test firing at the factory.
I came home to look it up in the Standard Catalog of S&W, and according to that reference, the serial number prefix which is on my receipt is not correct. My serial number starts with AFZ and the reference says it should be ALU.
Okay, so did I just buy a nicely done fake, or more charitably, "custom" gun, or is there another serial number range for 3" 66-2 revolvers?
The good news is that I paid $595 out the door including sales tax, which wouldn't be bad for any unfired pristine S&W 66 from that period. So, the worst scenario is I bought a nice shooter without collector value. Without the original grips and box, I suppose it is a shooter in any event.
Does anyone know for sure what I have here? Thanks.
