S&W Model 10, Heavy or Pencil

I get most of what you're saying, but not the hearing loss thing. Plugs and muffs and you still get ringing? [...]

Our indoor range echoes worse than most. In a stroke of wisdom the powers that be removed old fashioned acoustic ceiling tiles and replaced them with dry board. However, it remains the only place to go at "O'Dark-30".

Just a pair of standard muffs is all I need indoors and out. Never double up. Hate the plugs. Never could get them in right.
Sounds like you're doing OK without any help. However, if it would be convenient to be able to use plugs, try the following if you haven't already.

First off, it may be that the best plugs are the orange military ones that have three rings on them. Could be that one size DOES fit all.

Second, it helps to have an insertion tool. For the gov't plugs, a gov't ball point pen works perfectly. Unscrew the bottom barrel of the pen and put the shaft of the plug in the barrel of the pen.

Third, it helps to straighten out the ear canal for insertion. When inserting a plug into the right ear, reach around behind your head with your left hand and grab your right ear lobe. Pulling on it will straighten out your ear canal a little and make it much easier to insert the earplug with the pen barrel in your right hand. Go only as far as you need to get a seal.

You probably already know what I would recommend for the left ear.

Hope this helps. It works great for me.

Heavy barrel for me as well. First issued duty weapon was a Model 10 with heavy barrel. Love at 1st sight, if you can fall in love with an inanimate object like a gun.:D

I like a pencil barrel with a partridge sight . . . . .

My first S&W revolver was a Mod 10 Pencil barrel. Having used the Mod 15 in the service, I thought the pencil barrel looked kind of light, wimpy or just old. The longer I've had the Mod 10, the more I like it. I have now a Mod 15, and I think they are both classics in their own right. Hey, if it says Smith and Wesson on the side, what else could we ask for??!!

I picked-up my new (used) Model 10-5 from my FFL today. Looks a lot better after I cleaned it up. It has a standard barrel.

Plan to put a few rounds through it after the weekend. Don't like to do any shooting on the weekend since a lot of folks come to the lake on the weekend wanting peace and quite except for the personal water craft buzzing around. During the week I have the place to myself and can shoot out back. On the lake the front is always the side toward the lake.

Good for you, you can't go wrong with any of them. Be sure to post some pics.

I prefer the standard, or tapered, barrel. I've sold off all my HB 10's and 64's. I only have the standard 10 4" and a tapered 10 3".

I've since sold off the HB 10 shown below. I liked the balance of the std and 3" better.

Depends on the barrel length

I like 3" heavy barrel but standard barrel on anything longer. My favorite 38 special revolver however, is not a S&W.

I have never had the chance to see a tapered 10 3", must be quite a rare bird.

They were scarce or at least uncommon until the state of Victoria Australia surplused their square butt 3" tapered barrel 10s approximately two years ago. Buds sold them for $279 shipped. They sold out fast.

For reasons that elude me square butt 3" 10s ordinarily have tapered barrels while round butt 3" 10s have heavy barrels.
