I have a chance to acquire an unfired S&W Model 18 .22LR, w/ a 6" barrel, not the 4" model. Any idea as ti its value? Not sure whether box, papers, etc. are available w/ it.......
Thanks for any help on this.
Me neither, but I've had my hands on this one and it is a model 18 .22lr, w/ a 6" barrel. I believe it was like the .38 i combat masterpiece. I am a collector, myself of pined, recessed models.
The 18 was (supposedly) only made in a 4" model. I think you ought to look it over carefully and get more info, especially if the owner wants a premium for the longer barrel. Also might be a mismarked 17 - and generally speaking, mismarked guns are not considered more valuable.
I thought they only made 4" but S&W does do interesting things at times.
If the gun is as good as you say it is I would buy it. Its either a S&W oddball or a very good barrel swap. So it will either end up as a safe queen or be I would think a very good shooter.
With a S&W you can never say never but the Model 18 was the K-22 Combat Masterpiece and they came with 4" barrels. I would check it out real good. But for that price you are getting a good shooter so what the heck.
Is this a Model 18 no dash? And does it have four or five screws? Stocks?
Highly unlikely that it is a factory Model 18 with a six inch barrel unless possibly mis-stamped. I would be very suspect. On the other hand, if mechanically sound and appears unfired with original finish, at $575 how bad can you get hurt? Pictures would help a lot. Good luck.
Let's ask the easy question that may not be obvious...
What does the front sight look like? Is that a combat style ramp or is it a patridge front sight like a target revolver wears? 18's had a combat sight and 17's had a target front sight. If the barrel was swapped, that is a big clue.
Add me to the group that says a 6-inch S&W K-frame .22LR in working condition that has no major deficits is a solid buy at $575.

We've seen a few of these over the past year. Checking in with Roy to verify serial numbers, every one of them has turned out to be a Model 18 with a replaced barrel. I would be suspicious of any that show up.
As noted above, there is also the possibility of a mis-marked model number, but so far the preponderance of evidence points to barrel swaps.
Added: However, even if it turns out to be an altered Model 18, how do you go wrong with $575 for a K-22 (assuming it is fully functional with the finish in top condition)?
Like new condition. I already have several of these. Mainly curious, as I had never heard of a 6" barrel Model 18. I think he has the box, also. I'll check.
If the condition is mechanically sound and may have some surface wear a Mod 17 is currently bringing 600 - 700. You couldn't really go wrong if condition warrants.
