I recently bought a S&W model 27-2 S prefix ( first 4 S268) from 1966-67

The revolver is in immaculate shape but it has one curiosity, it has Austrian proof marks on frame and barrel. I pick it up on Thursday and I'll get pictures of it up then.

In the mean time has anyone seen this on a 27? I've seen it on the victory but never a 27. Any info would be appreciated.

I've seen German and Italian proof stamps on S & W revolvers, but not Austrian. It would probably letter as shipping to a European distributor.

Thanks I was thinking maybe the loan program for police or military. Think I'll get the overpriced letter to get some history on this beauty.

If you want to sell firearms in Europe they must be proofed. European nations have proof houses and recognize each others standards so this revolver was proofed in Austria before sale because there is no American proof house. Nothing unusual or significant.

I'll post pics on Thurs. when I pick it up. I know about the proof houses, bit I've just never seen another 27 with proof marks. I just wondered if anyone else has ran across one with them

Will get pics up as soon as I can. Should have taken some at the shop. It was from a huge estate turn in consigned at a shop something like 40-50 S&W's, guess the guy was a collector.

any American guns shipped to Europe for sale must be proofed and stamped as such. many other countries have this besides Europe. I have a colt woodsman match target with Australian proofs on it. just means it was exported there at some time.
