S&W Model 30

This is my first post. I stand to inherit a S&W blued Model 30 I frame revolver with a 3 inch barrel. I would like to know when it was manufactured. The serial # is 712044.Thank You in advance for any relevant information, John Franklin

SN 695837, four inch barrel in nickel, was shipped in February of 1961, someone may have a closer sn. Nice little guns, enjoy. Lots of information available if you use the "search" button at the top of the page.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

The company didn't track the manufacture dates of its revolvers, rather they can offer the date your Model 30 was shipped from the factory.

I have a Model 31 (square butt .32 Long) that was serialed in the same series as your Model 30. Mine is serial number 689371 and likely left the factory in August 1958.

You're getting a terrific little S&W. Great fun to shoot. Enjoy.

With lower powered lead bullet loads it will be a fun shooter. Jacketed hollow points will make it an adequate carry gun for self defense. Reloading is easy to do and will make it so cheap to shoot you won’t believe it!

According to the S&W Standard Catalog, the model 30-1 built on the J-Frame started at @ Serial #712954 in 1961, so sounds like you have one of the last I frame Model 30's. Congrats, and we like pictures.

Update: The gun I was looking to have transferred to my name is in Virginia and would have to be sent up to NJ by a Virginia FFL licensed dealer and received by a NJ FFL licensed dealer. Don't know what it would cost for the dealer in Va. but $75 for the log in and transfer here in NJ. No dice! Thank you all for your help.... John Franklin

my (daughter's) model 30 no dash I frame is a sweet shooter. she doesn't like the flat latch because its harder to use than the later latch model 30-1 and subsequent.

I don't have any idea if the $75 bucks is the norm in your part of the world, but it's sure well worth that much investment to get this one.

Check with another FFL, that was a high price, many will do it for $30.00

John Franklin, the Model 30 is a sweet little gun. At even twice the cost of the transfer, it would be a steal. Don't let a few bucks deny you of this fine revolver.

M30 I-frames are somewhat uncommon. If all I was paying were the transfer fees, I'd be thrilled even if they were a bit expensive!
