I inherited a S&W 34/22 kit gun (blue). I called S&W with the serial number and they said that it was manufactured in 1977. I don't believe it has ever been shot. I would like to sell but am not sure what a reasonable price would be. Got any ideas?

If you can post a few picture, that will help.

Rough estimate, that model in 98% or better condition should bring about $700. if you have the original box, tools, paperwork, etc, add another $100 or more.

Please post a picture so we can see the condition. Price also depends on whether you have the original box, papers and tools that came with gun.

You can also look on the gun auction sites such as GB, AA and GA to see wwat the competed sales are bringing. Also do a search in the classified section on this forum to compare your gun with those being sold.

I purchased a very nice Mod 34-1 last year for less than $400, no box or papers. It was not in Excellent condition but I would say it was VG. I've seen some real nice Mod 34s go on this forum for $450 and up, with box and papers for $500-550.

The 22LR revolvers are very popular guns now but the J frame 34 doesn't bring the same high price that a K frame Mod 17 or 18 brings.

The pictures are pretty dark and it is hard to tell the condition of the Mod 34. Looks like a few marks or smudges but that may be from finger prints. It does have the square butt rather than the round butt found on the majority of the Mod 34 J frames. If it is in VG to Excellent condition without the box, paper and tools I would say the pricing would be around $450.

If you want to sell it post in the classified here and give a forum member a shot at it.

However, another thought, since you inherited this Mod 34, does it have any sentimental value to you. If so these are great little guns and the 22LR is cheap to shoot. Some of the guns that I cherish the most are the ones passed down from relatives. Just a thought.

There are some smudges but as you point out those are finger prints. I have not cleaned the gun in any way which is my bad. I may go to the range and fire it and then decide if I want to keep it. The strange thing is I didn't know my Dad had the gun until I was cleaning out their house and found it. Thanks for all your insight. It definitely has given me something to think about.

I have a Model 34 that looks just like that. I find that the grips are a bit small for me, but luckily mine came with some target grips as well as the original ones.

They are fun to shoot and accurate too. Have fun!

CAB1948, I'd like to re-emphasize jp's advise to hold onto that jewel. They're very popular right now and you could probably get over $500 for it, but in a few months you'll very likely regret the decision to sell it. An inhereted gun is something that's a little special and may be impossible to redeem. Just my $0.02. -S2

Keep it. And I say that wanting to buy it from you. A dad gun is something you can't ever, ever own again. I use the J Frame 22 for new shooters so I am always looking for one more...but keep it. I promise you, after you spend the money you got for it, you will always wish you had the gun back.

Ditto to what Mr. Norton said. I still have my Dad's old Winchester 12 gauge model 25 pump. It's a beater but is still my most precious gun and can never be replaced. First time I shot it the thing it just about layed me out when I was 7 years old, but I begged to shoot it. He and my uncles got a good chucle out of that one:-)

That revolver is still a beaut and .22's are so cheap and fun to shoot.

The "Keep It" Wins

You guys have convinced me. I bought a small gun safe for it and some guns my Dad had. Thanks.

cab1948 - I don't know you or your curcumstances, however I think you made the right decision and a great decision. Personally I have bought several guns that I don't think I will ever sell but I have inheritted guns from my Dad and f-i-l that I know I will never sell and will leave to my grandkids when I go.

Happy shooting and enjoy.
