S&W model 41 Lets see what you got

Hi Everyone,

Here's the beauty of this one:
  • It has serial #907XX...I think it was made the year I was born! (can anyone confirm the year built?) :)
  • It has an efs barrel! (with lazy &) :D
  • It also came with another barrel...I was bummed it wasn't an efs, but I got it home and it is the 5" field barrel!!!
  • It has what looks to be white factory lettering (both barrels). Anyone heard of this?
  • My buddy says it looks like it was a safe queen.
  • Nice Herret grips...fits my friend's huge hands as well as my wife's small hands.
I'll post pics soon...right now I'm not sure what to do with it. I was anxious to take it to the range, but after finding out all this, I'd hate to shoot up such a nice find.

Thanks for any help and thanks to all of you for helping me find my dream shooter...even if I'm afraid to 'shoot-'er'. ;)

Ken

Here are the pics - sorry...not very good pics and they don't do her justice, but I think she's still a beauty. :)

Hi Everyone,

I've been a lurker here since shooting with a buddy and trying his Model 41. You guys (and gals) had me drooling and yearning for the day I would finally be able to get my mitts on one of these beauties.

Well today was the day!!! :D

A week of so back I went to Gander Mountain (major sporting goods retailer here) and saw a M41 in the used gun case. I had to look at her right away! The salesman said that it just came in and also came with an extra barrel. He added that he was considering buying it, but got a Buckmark instead. He was about to put it away, but I had to say "ring her up!".

Ken, I'd say you did pretty well! I would've been all over that one. The 5.5" EFS and 5" Field barrels are worth $300+ each. The "white lettering" is not factory, someone just added some paint to make the letters stand out and this can be removed if desired. Good luck and I hope she shoots as good as she looks! Now it's time to accessorize!

OH MY GOODNESS!!!

You should be proud of such a GREAT collection...I am very envious! Thanks for the info!

I actually took the 41 out to the indoor range early this morning with the efs barrel using Walmart Remington Target ammo (~$8 for 100) and she is the finest gun I've shot yet.

My eyes are too old for iron sights, so it was a real struggle trying to focus, but I managed this group at ~25ft/8.5yds off a small sandbag.

I'd say she's a keeper! I'll try to get a newer barrel so that I can get a red dot on it without ruining the two I have. It's so nice to finally be in the club! :)

Hi all, I just got lucky with one of these guns and would like to get some more info about. the Serial is A6466XX Can you tell me what year it was made and anything significant I should know about it? I haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet, but got it for $375 with 500 rounds of ammo. I would say it's in 98% condition, beautiful blue and 1 minor nick exactly where the slide stop is when cocked.

Picked up my first 41 today. A shooter grade A135xxx. I believe it's 40 years old.

I bought one (new) in 1969 with serial number 123XXX. I competed with it for many years and still shoot whenever I'm home. I've never had a problem with it, it one of my favorite guns. Enjoy yours!!!

I have Model 42 serial number A40403. See my thread about the "A" prefix being before S&W supposedly started using the "A" prefix. A member suggested this my be S&W's way of designating a duplicate serial number.

My gun is the 7 3/8" barrel, with muzzle brake, muzzle cap in a small brown envelope, has the early type rear sight non-dovetail, and a vertical line on the left side of the barrel just back of the muzzle which I'm told is an indexing mark for a positioning a barrel weight. However, I do not have the barrel weight. My gun came with a sales receipt dated 1963. Any ideas regarding the serial number and date of manufacture? Sorry, I don't have the capability to post pictures. I'm working on that short coming. Thanks.

Model 46

I fired my new to me model 46 to-day for the 1st time as I received it only yesterday. Its a cheaper version of the 41. I am amazed as I can nail either Bulls or 10's all day with ease with it every time. The trigger feel is identical to a 41 as I fired one on Thursday night which belongs to my club. My gun has the small metal weight on it at the front but not the other 2 optional ones that hang under it. No box or paperwork but it sure shoots really sweet. The serial no. for it is 45427 which I believe is around 1963. I am turning green with seeing all the 41's in this thread. They certainly are beautiful for sure.

gobbler - 1961 SN, but since not in actual sequence for finishing or shipping - Jinks is the GURU. As noted, the verticle mark on the bbl is a mark for positioning the upper piece of the 3 piece weight set consistantly. As noted elsewhere, the "A" indicates a duplicate correction

Hello All!

I figured I would do my part to keep this thread alive by posting my first Model 41. This is a 4 digit serial number from 1957 or 1958 . I just picked up an old (not as old as the gun but an earlier oner I think) 5" field barrel. I don't know if the number on the bottom the barrel really means anything, but the 5" has a 2 stamped on it. The 7 3/8" has an S (not a 5 but a curvy S) stamped on the bottom.

Very nice gun, and excellent first post! Welcome to the board!

Model 41 pics

Here's one I purchased a while back, used but in excellent condition, serial TFM04xx. Not sure of it's age...included were both barrels (7 & 5.5), seven mags, orig box and cleaning stuff...haven't seen a scope mount base like this before, full length of the bbl and recessed front and rear to fit over the sights, anyone recognize this mount?

Thanks in advance, great forum here!

Ron

Here are my 1958(7 3/8", no brake) and a 1967-8(5.5" EFS barrel) babies. Must learn to take better pics. Got a new barrel for the scope, original put away.
