Does anyone know if S&W ever released a Model 514?

I have an acquaintance who is selling a 6" .38SPL revolver that he is calling a 514. The picture for it looks exactly like a Model 17-6 with the full underlug (including a front patridge sight). I've asked him to check the frame for the model number, but I thought I would ask here, also.

I know that 5xx can indicate a blued revolver (i.e. 547, 586, etc.). And x14 might be correct for a 6" .38SPL target model. But my Google-fu has failed on finding any reference to a "514".

Anyone have any info on the model if it is valid? I thought the 14-6 was the last in this line.

Thanks.

No such animal as a 514. Maybe it's a 14-5 and the seller is dyslexic? Maybe it's a pre-model number gun (made prior to about 1958) and he's reading one of the factory assembly numbers that's stamped in the yoke?

There was a M14-5 with the full lug. Looked like a M586. The -6 was drilled and tapped for a scope base, and the -7 got the new frame, MIM hammer & trigger, and frame mounted firing pin. In theory, a -8 would have the lock, but I've never seen or heard of one.

If it is a M14-5, they're great guns, but they do tend to sell less than comparable .357 Mag guns. Something in the $450 to $650 range, depending on condition, goodies (stock, box...), and location.

Bottom is a 14-5, probably item in question. They have "finger groove combat stocks" which I have returned to this one (although they should belong on a Model 19). Joe
