I just purchased a brand new Chrome Model 59 and most of the instructions to disassemble the pistol assumes that the slide is no problem to take off!! I am having big problems positioning the indent of the slide on the left side (I call it
the slide hold back slot) to the front of the slide stop. I have followed the instructions, but I can not push the end of the pen from the right side to the left side to pull the slide stop
out to remove the slide! I get them lined up and I push the
pen in while I pull on the slide stop, but to no avail. Somebody help me get the darn slide off, so I can clean off
the newness! Thanks!!

Hello junebug,

It is tricky getting the take down pin out, with just your finger pressure. DUH! right, LOL. What I do is use a small flat head screw driver to apply pressure once you get the alignment right. Since this is your 1st time working with it, I hope you have good hand strength and patience. It will come out eventually. The slide has be be in the right spot to release. Once the pin is out, pull the trigger to release the slide.

I have used a coin, a flat screwdriver, and a spoon to help press the pin out after I hurt my thumb and used strong language... :D

Once it is aligned, some combination of the above will generate enough pressure to 'pop' the pin out.

You can also use a small plastic headed hammer to lightly tap on the end of the pin on the right side when all is aligned. Also note that there is a detent spring on the left side and when the pin is out, you'll notice that it has a flat side which will help when re-inserting the slide stop lever.

If you hook the thumb of your left hand in the trigger guard, and pull the slide back to the proper location for removing the slidestop, with the rest of your fingers wrapped around the top of the slide, you can hold that position all day long. Then you've got your right hand free to remove the slide stop. I've always just tapped a recalcitrant one with something made of plastic, like the handle of a screwdriver, to keep from marring the finish of the pistol.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I'm sure that it is out...but a magazine in the pistol will make it hard to remove the slide stop.

Make sure to align the slide stop notch with the slide catch lever end.
Be careful when swiveling it out or it will scratch your slide or frames finish.

Wowwwwwww!! I finally got it lined up, and by using a small screw driver popped that pen right out!! That is only half tlhe problem!! Getting the slide back on the frame was the worse problem. I honestly worked 45 minutes getting the ejector and sear release lever
to drop down enough to get the slide all the way back on the frame!!!
I must say this probably was the first time the pistol was ever taken apart. Everything was new and tight!! Thanks for the help!! junebug

Try this to remove the slidestop pin. sharpie holds the slide open. Then push the levers down like this.
