Last Sunday 3-10-13, I was up at 05:00, made coffee and settled down in recliner to watch the news. Hearing something outside I muted the TV, voices. I raced to th bedroom grabbing a model 60, just as they knocked on the front door.

Opening the door, two men standing there. I was holding the 60 behind my back. The older of the two was in my face, nearly, and holding a long mag-lite. The first words he said were "you have a gun".

Bring the revolver to my side and cocking caused them both to take a couple of steps back. With them stating, they were lost, out of gas, and pulling a stock trailer.

I told them I have no gas, as I drive a disel p/up. They step off the porch I closed the door and locked it.

Could hear them talking in front of house, so I called the police, it is 05:45 now. Police sending Officer wright out.

The Sun is coming up, I can see them parked in the front yard, of a nearby house that is forsale, no police.

At this point, I abandoned the model 60. Retrieving a Stevens 311, with 20 inch barrels. Got six rounds of 00 Buck, and loaded gun.

Walked about 200 yards to their vehicle, they assured me they were not stealing, trailer was empty. Looked like they were sleeping in back of van.

Gave them maybe a half gallon of gas, explained I never wanted to see them agin.

Unknown to me, police picked them up as they left neighborhood. Two hours after I called.

They were not out of gas, a neighbor had them on video moving van four times during the night. Also burglarizing his out buildings.

One was an escaped convict, to be considered armed and dangerous.

The second had 7 outstanding warrents.

Van and trailer were stolen.

The model 60 felt great in my hand. What would have happened without it!!!

Great story! Especially if you consider that not you but an old lady or kids would have opened the door. And good to see that video surveillance is not just a hobby for oddballs.

Interestingly enough they knew at once that you have a gun. Who else would have known but LEO or BG?!?

You can only imagine what action would have been taken by them next if your answer to having a gun was no...

Your story gives me chills thinking about being in that situation. Glad you were prepared. We should all be as forward thinking as that should the need arise.

God Bless.

Great job. I am glad you are ok and that you had a plan and knew what to do. I hope they catch those guys.

You are lucky the guy didn't use the Mag-Lite on your head before asking if you had a gun. Too close for comfort in my book.

Glad things worked out for you, but since you have posted this I will "critic" two things (if I may). that you might want to reconsider if this situation ever happened again.

1) I would NOT have cocked the M60 while pointing it at them - too easily discharged unintentionally when the adrenalin is flowing. Even though they were not exactly choir boys, the last thing you need is to defend yourself for an AD indictment in today's political climate!

2) I would NOT have abandon the M60 when you grabbed the shotgun. Sticking it in your waistband or pocket would have been a better move IMHO just in case.

Glad you are OK.

Any time someone knocks on a strangers door between 7 pm and 9 am I would think they should expect to be greeted with a gun in hand. A exception would be a blizzard or whatever. I once answered a knock on the door at 11 pm. A black 25 year old wanted to know if this is where the party is? I never pointed my nickle 2 1/2" python at him but let him see it when I gestered with it down the street what way he might go. I thought I was going to have to shovel his eyeballs off the door step along with some other waste.

I am NOT a LEO but if someone knocked on my door at that hour I would NOT open it - but I would have proper "tools in hand" of course. Thankfully we have a highly audible intercom system at the front and rear doors. If the person at the door tried to force entry then there would be no doubt as to his intentions. No need to INVITE trouble into the house by opening the door - IMHO, of course.

I never was a leo but worked 35 years as a lockheed guard and at least 32 of those years were on graveyard. Thats a big company, more people worked there than live in many towns. Most of my job was prowling all night around the huge perimiter. You would be surprised how many nuts are out in the wee hours. Over the years I dealt with more mental cases wandering in the dark than I can count. In a way it probley made me LESS cautious. Being in uniform and open carrying a sidearm none but the stupidest is going to give you much of a argument.
But when those same fools knock on someones door in the middle of the night that they dont know its a good bet they are up to no good.
Kind of reminds me of a old traveling salesman joke. This guy got a flat late at night. He had no jack. He recalled passing a farm a mile back. As he was walking towards the farm he started to worry about knocking on the door at such a late hour. Maybe the farmer might shoot him, maybe his dogs would tear him up etc. Then he found himself at the door knocking. The farmer answered the door and the salesman blurted out, ya can keep your darn jack!

Not a wise move to leave the house and walk the 200 yds to
confront them if police we're called. For all you knew there
might have been more than just the two perps.
Something fishy about this "story" to me.
Please post link related to the apprehension
or arrest of these individuals.

WOW! Not sure I could have been so calm.

? What do you think of answering the door with the gun in hand but hanging at your side rather than behind your back. Seems to me that having your hand behind your back slows your response time just enough to be a problem?? (in that situation)
