Hi all, I am a gunsmith at a local gun store and am working on a customer's S&W 64-7. It came to me missing the extractor, so I ordered one and tried to install it. It fit the cylinder just fine, but when fully assembled with the cylinder closed, the hammer cannot be cocked and pulling the trigger will advance the cylinder but not fire. I've attached a couple of photos showing the new extractor installed in the revolver, along with a second cylinder from another 64-7 laid on top that works fine when installed. Perhaps there is some fitting that needs to be done? Any help or clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Next Steps for fitting an Extractor for a 64-7

Using the search function on this forum you can read quite a bit about fitting the extractor. Here is one of the better content posts including a copy of the S&W Armorer's Manual page on filing the extractor to fit.

Thanks for the truly helpful and educational links. I now realize that the job of fitting the extractor for this revolver is beyond my current skills.

Anybody know of a gunsmith who has experience with this in the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area? Or should I just send it back to S&W to have it factory fitted?

Welcome! There probably is a recommended gunsmith in your area, but the factory is probably the best place to go. In the past, adjusting the ratchet teeth there was reserved for very experienced senior personnel at the factory.
