S&W Model 64 and youth beginner

Our 12 year old has expressed intrest in shooting handguns and i don't really have anything for him to shoot.My wife has let him shoot her Glock 23 with a 9mm barrel but i don't think he is quite ready for all that just yet.

Long story short,i have a friend who has a S&W model 64 he says i can have for $275.00.Would it be worth it(not money wise but for a youth to start with).He has his own 22 rifle and now a H&R break open 223 for hunting.

So would this be a good starter gun or let him keep shooting his mom's G23

Yes ! I would make the gun his. Let it be his first handgun. With lots of gun safety lesson.

Yes that or a 22 revolver my nine yearold son shoots my 64,28 and my single six with great proficency.I find that a semi auto is not the best choice for a beginner. Good luck and the price is fair in my opinion.

So many of us on this site learned to shoot with a K frame S&W that you won't get any arguments from us on that. I can't think of too many better guns to start with. Some here might recommend a K-22 (K frame in 22LR) instead, but at 12, he should be able to handle the 38. You can pick up a K-22 later on for trigger practice and cheaper ammo.

I love Glocks but you're not going to do much better learning to shoot on a double action S&W revolver.

That would be a good gun to start him on. With target loads it is almost as mild a 22.

I think that would be the perfect handgun to start your 12 year old shooting. I believe the revolver is better starter than an auto-loader both for safety reasons and mastering the basics of marksmanship. Light target loads don't have much recoil or muzzle blast and shouldn't be hard for him to develop confidence and competency with them. I also think that's a decent price on the 64.

That would be an excellent choice.

I would load him some 148 wadcutters or 158 SWC at @ 700fps to start.

If you do not reload then just get some "factory" 148gr wadcutters.

They kill rabbits and other small game good, and do not tear up to much meat.

Speer shotshells work great for snakes and small game as well.

Hi,
I agree with the others. A model 64 would be a good choice. And 148gr
wadcutters would be the best. However, I learned on a 22 LR and the gun talk me good shoot habits.

Yeah, I agree. I shot my dad's model 13 and his model 19 when I was about that age with .38 rounds. I've been a revover fan ever since, and I bet he will be!!
