The original magazines with the metal cartridge follower and floorplate:
Can these be up graded with black cartridges followers and floorplates ?

What is the proper method for taking the metal floor plate off ?

I think you're trying to practice false economy. There are collectors who look for those old magazines to go with their older pistols. I think you'd be better off offering them up for trade in exchange for newer mags.

The short answer is, yes. The long answer is you might be just as well off to buy 4506 magazines and sell the first version 645 magazines.

Jimmy,
It was the second generation stainless Smith autos that had the stainless magazines with the metal base plate and metal followers, such as the 639, 659, and 645. These magazines are sought after by collectors and usually get a fairly high price. It wasn't until the 3rd generation autos that they went with the plastic base plates and followers. You could sell the early magazines you have and buy the correct magazines for your 4506 and still have money left over. That is the route I would go instead of trying to modify the early magazines you have.

Just my opinion.
Larry
