Good afternoon, I have a S&W Model 645, S/N: TAT0381. I am trying to find out when it was manufactured and an approximate value. I purchased it from a gun show 15 to 20 years ago and never shoot the thing. It is stainless steel. Mechanically in great shape but cosmetically a bit rough. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’m going to guess it was shipped in late 1986. The rear sight is not original, it’s stolen from a 745. Grips are not original either.

I can’t even guess -HOW- the finish got so dark, is this more a photograph element or does the pistol look this gray?

If I owned that, it would be fun to beat it without mercy. If I did not want to own it and someone offered me $400, I would say “are you SURE?” If yes, I would hand it over, take the cash and then sprint away at full speed and never return to that scene.

The front sight is not integral to the slide. I noticed it didn’t have a red insert, looked closer and saw that a dovetail had been cut. Definitely a 745, (fixed,) rear sight.

Hmmmm

Should be a great shooter and if it matters you could clean it up.

*** Edit to add, I forgot to WELCOME you to this Forum. Great and somewhat perplexing first post for sure. ***

I’ll give you $400 for it right now. I’m serious.

That thing has been to Wayne Novak’s at some point. I’ll bet it’s had an action job. He used to mill the front sight off and replace the rear with either his own, or one from a 745. I’m assuming the grey is from some form of acid wash, but that’s speculation on my part.

I have a 645 and a 745. And try as I might, I can’t get them to group worth a hoot off a rest. But I shoot them offhand better than I can my 4 inch 686 that will put 5 under an inch and a half at 25 yards.

I can’t believe you’ve never fired it.
