S&W Model 66-2 Snub: First Shots

Great fight-in-wheelgun for belt carry or bedside. I had a sw66 -1 and wore it out of time with 10,000 plus 357 mag loads. Replacing it with a M19-4 nickel that was unfired till I started to use it. I like a 158hpswc with 6.2 grs of unique. I carry it in a galco thumbbreak pancake rig which holds it high and tight. CCW gets the ww 145 silver tip hp. Had one just like this one back in 1971. Its great to have one back in duty. A classic wheelgun/

Excellent report on a fine gun. I have one just about like it and love it, except; it is hard to unload in a hurry, the ejector rod is just a tad short.

30 years ago who would have ever believed that S&W would ever quit making the 2.5" 19/66.

As you well know, hang onto it. Or sell it to me and I will use both hands, to hang onto it.

Hello and thank you all for the comments. As others have noted, who would have thought decades ago when we were rolling those old Model 58's out of the way to look at '27's and such that the oh-so-common would become the oh-so-scarce in but a few decades? When I think of the revolvers I let slip away, I am determined not to repeat the same mistake.

Steve, well-done report with great photography about one of my favorite K-frame configurations. The 19-3 2 1/2" I bought in 1976 was the had-to-have gun. I still have it and carried it plenty over the years. Picked up a 66-1 snub a few years back and it makes a nice stainless companion to the blued 19. But, since our PD converted to semi-auto in the late 80's that is what I have trained with for nearly 20 years. My Glock 23 with 14 rounds of Speer Gold Dot does not take up much more space than my 19 or 66 and I shoot it well. Never will the G23 or any Glock have the glamour or class that these fine revolvers possess, however. I should get mine out to the range more often and your fine post gives me some motivation. Thanks. BTW, I like the standard grips with a Tyler T-grip adapter, it was made for my hand.

Very nice model 66 and nicely done report. I purchased a 2.5" 66-2 in about 1982 and carried it on duty for some time before switching to a 1911. I carried it often over the years and sold it last year with the box, docs and tools. It was still in excellent condition. I sold it to get a 3" 66-2 and was able to find one NIB at a very reasonable price. They are great guns. Enjoy it.
