Hello all,
I have a pre 80's Model 60 that is getting a bit loose at the cylinder. No lead shavings but will not lock up completely tight anymore. Has anyone sent theirs back to S&W and if so were you happy with the results? Also could you share what the cost would be on something of this nature. Thanks and God bless... cordell

cordell,

Is it getting loose radially or longitudinally? If it just moves forward and back a bit, it needs spacers in the ejector rod assembly or for the e-rod to be "stretched." If on the other hand it moves (rolls) a bit on its axis you will need to work on or replace the locking bolt that comes up through the bottom of the cylinder window and locks into the notches of the cylinder. BTW, do these notches show significant wear or peening? Either way, unless the cylinder itself is damaged or badly worn, a good local gunsmith with knowledge of the S&W revolver system should be able to fix it without going back to S&W.

I'm amazed that it is shooting loose with 38s... do you shoot it a lot, or did you get it (well) used, or what?

I recently replaced the cylinder stop on a S&W. It locks up now like a brand new gun. S&W will send you a new MIM part if you order from them. Don't be surprised if it is back ordered.

Froggie,
It has play from side to side, but the notches look sharp and un-peened to me. I bought this second hand and it already had the play in it. I have not had a problem with any shaving but don't want to wait until I do have a problem and then address it.

I went into serious debt and bought one of these when they came out in the 60's and it was the most accurate snub I have ever owned. I bought this one and although it is accurate it won't hold a candle to my original M-60. (It could have something to do with 70 year old eyes????!!!) Thanks for the input and God bless you and yours.. cordell

Retired W4,
First thanks for your service and congratulations on making W4. I will contact a local smith who is S&W certified and see what he can do. Take care and God bless. cordell (Warrant Officers were highly regarded in the Corps)
