Hi There,

I was rereading through the Charles Pate book: Smith &
Wesson American Model in U.S. and Foreign Service,
and I noticed on page 281 a diagram that purport to show
the 1st and 2nd model barrel hinge screws (not drawn to
scale). If one looks closely at the three piece 2nd model
screw, one notices it is not correct. The legend with the
diagram states this was taken from Roy Double's monograph:
Variations Of The Smith & Wesson 1870 American 1874,
so I found a copy and purchased it to see what it says.

I have included some pics from those books so you can see
what I am talking about:

(1) - Page 281 from Charles Pate's book,
(2) - Close-up of the diagram on page 281,
(3) - Plate 15 from Roy Double's monograph,
(4) - Barrel Hinge Screw Asm. from SN 11747,
(5) - Another view of the Barrel Hinge Screw from SN 11474.

As one can see, the locking screw actually interacts with the
hinge pin and not the male screw that threads into the hinge
pin as illustrated in the foregoing diagrams.

Just to be complete, the old standard or 'Bible' of S&W col-
lecting, Smith & Wesson 1857 to 1945 A Handbook for
Collectors, by Neal and Jinks, on page 162 states:

"...the barrel-frame hinge pin was changed from one piece to
two piece, the old type being inserted from the left and thread-
ed into the frame hinge lug on the right side and the new type
being a hollow type inserted from the left side and threaded
inside to receive a locking screw inserted from the right side."

which is correct as far as it goes but there isn't any mention of
the 'grub' screw that prevents the hinge screw from turning.

So, mistakes are made even by the most experienced among
us (myself included).

Cheers!
Webb
