S&W Performance Center 629 2.625" Barrel Hurts How Bad?

I am looking at purchasing the S&W Perf Ctr 629 (Picture 1) as a match two the 627 I already own (Pic 2). My concern is .44 Magnum recoil on a 37 oz. weapon.

I shoot the 49 oz. 7.5" .44 Magnum with ca. 885 ft. lbs. hunting loads without a problem, but it is ported and carries the extra weight of a Leupold 2x20 (in my son's hands picture 3). It amazingly pushes straight back.

Just yesterday I burned off a number of boxes of .357 Magnum double action on the 627 and 586 L-Comp (Pic 4) without a problem. But it was lighter Remington Golden Saber .357 Magnum at 413 ft. lbs. of energy, not really approaching the territory of a .44 Magnum. Even Speer Short Barrel Personal Defense exceeds 500 ft. lbs. in .44 Magnum.

So, if you have experience with this weapon in .44 Magnum, I'd love to hear your advice on the pain.

I have a 629 Deluxe with a 3 inch barrel. It weighs in at 39.6 ounces empty and comes with Altamont wooden grips that offer more hand contact than those on the 629 PC. Shooting it with full strength magnums can be a handful. I'm good for about two or three cylinders barehanded before I cry uncle.
I carry some shooting gloves just for this gun that make the recoil much more tolerable.

I can tell you the recoil of a Model 69 at 37 oz is bearable with full power loads but I shoot typically 10-15 of those at a range session. The shock into the hand and wrist just degrades my accuracy after that so not much point in continuing.

Had a 3" Model 29 at one time. Wanted the 629 version instead. Foolishly traded it off before acquiring the latter. Then when the 629 was made again, it had unfluted cylinders and a full underlug barrel. Ugh. Never got one. Want traditional. Been waiting for Talo to make another run. S&W and Talo show them on their websites, but nothing is in current production.

Anyway, I found that with regular 240gr 44 Mag ammo, the 3" barrel actually kicked less than a 4" barrel, though at the expense of more blast, flash and muzzle climb.

The shortest barrel length I've shot in 44 magnum is 3". I have a 629-1 and a dash 6 Talo gun. Full house magnum loads will make you say something besides "uncle". You'll want to throw the rubber grips on for more than a cylinder's worth. If you reload then you can tame your loads or just run 44 spl rounds if you plan to be at the range for more than a minute.

I have both. 44 can certainly hit harder, but nothing crazy. Different kind of recoil impulse. If you don't it too much, you can shoot 44 special all day. The key is grips that with you well. I have VZs on mine. They are hard, but they fit my hand well.

I have a M629-1 with a 2 1/2" barrell
I put 50 thru it at the range most times. It hurts a bit but managable

I have the exact PC 629. Most of the time, I shoot 44 special. I have shot 44 mag revolution. It was a handful but not hurtful. Note: I put rubber Pach grip on mine, plus use a glove when shooting 44 mag loads. About 18 months ago, I tried using a Sig dot scope with my PC 629. The dot scope kept on shooting lose plus I only shot 6 inch groups at 75 yards. It didn't work out. The dot scope is now history and I love to shoot the PC with the 44 special load. Doc in Pa.

A glove makes them more or less comfortable to shoot.

I have a 3" 29, 3" 629, 4" 329PD Scandium and have no trouble at all shooting standard 44 Magnum ammo in them. If I have no glove with me then I do not shoot many rounds, but with a glove on the shooting hand the recoil is not bad at all.

Now this is recoil, 500 Wyoming Express.

It's all in the grips. If you hate rubbers like I do the best wood for a 44 are factory made target stocks. That being said I have rubber on my 3 inch 629. Try 500 grips. They are nice and cushy on a 44

I have A 629 PC. The stock stocks are fairly unpleasant to shoot with.

I have tried Pachmyer Diamond Pros and like the looks a lot. They feel pretty good but my finger still gets pounded.

The compacts are better.

The best are the Decelerators. They make shooting it pretty comfortable.

Decelerators on mine, more practice with 44 specials. Not a target pistol for sure, it lives in my fishing bag. I figure the 2 or 4 legged varmint chasing me is going to get the worst of it.

Compared to my NIGHTGUARD .44 the steel 629 is not pleasurable...but the grin remains after the firing ends!!!
