So I received this S&W 19-5 in a trade many years ago. I really know nothing more about it accept it shoots amazing. I'm trying to find more information about this gun so I can get an accurate value to list and sell. It's not in perfect condition you can tell it had been used in PPC competitions. I tried to take pictures of any markings.

Thanks in advance for and help!!!

With PPC revolvers, a lot of the value is in "who" put them together. There were quite a few custom gunsmiths who were known to fit them up to shoot extremely accurately. The guns were intended for competition only, and to shoot a 148 gr. HBWC only. Actions were tuned for double action only and were normally very light and smooth. Accuracy was important as competitions were shot from 5 yds to 50 yds. The PPC competition isn't as popular as it once was and semi-auto's are now being used by some. Because these guns were often shot hundreds of thousands of rounds in practice and competition individual guns may have extensive wear. The cost of having a gun built can be up around $1000 to $2000 all depending. Unfortunately they don't hold their value. Look on Gunbroker and you will be able to find several, many of which haven't sold for over a year or more. If you want to really accurate revolver to play with, and can get one bought for less than the price of a comparable new model (without all the changes).

In terms of the markings in your photos, the stampings on the yoke and frame are just S&W factory assembly numbers, and will not help identify the person or company that modified the revolver for PPC use. The marking on the extractor cutout in the barrel is a date and frame designation that was likely placed there by the manufacturer of the barrel....not the person or company who fit the parts to the gun.

So what am I looking for? Is there a way to figure out who did the work? Any idea what is a fair price to sell it for?

A lot of the well known makers put their name on them somewhere, usually on the barrel side. There were gunsmiths all over that made them, very popular competition in its day. There may be no way to tell who made your gun unless you know the person that had it made and where he sent it. You do have the dot on it, the rib was taken off with the adjustable sights. There are holes in the top of the barrel where the rib attached.

As said above, they hang on Gunbroker for a while. I follow them. Even the names like Davis don't sell, they want too much for them. Just bought one abt 6 weeks ago here in the classifieds and paid 450 plus shipping. There was a 5" at the last gun show, he saw the spark in my eye and went from 650 to 500. It was built on a model 14 frame, no name as to who built it. It was tough but I didn't buy it. The NE Ohio Bunch is 2 weeks away and wanted to see what's for sale there first.

I have a Schneider custom that was a 6" with the rib on top. I shoot a 8 week double action league and wanted to lighten it some. We shoot one handed. Gave it to Andy Horvath to cut the bbl to 5" take the rib off. Since it was a model 14, I had the adjustable sights put on with a Weigand interchangeable front site base. Look in the competition section of the forum for the PPC revolver pictures and the Schneider is toward the last page.

I think if you got more then 500 for it you did good. Start at 650 or so shipped and drop from there. The dot has some value but not a lot. What brand is the dot??

I like the PPC revolvers and will look again at the 5" at the end of the month. They shoot very accurately but are too heavy for practical purposes. Actually I don't need it. Had a .32 long PPC build last fall, neat gun. Good luck, Larry

Back in the late to mid 80's I built several under lugs like your 19 has on it, the barrel could be from Brownells but I dont remember them selling any slab sided barrels from the time frame I did the work. I can tell you that whom ever drilled the trigger for the stop setscrew knew what he was doing, I only did one of my model 65's that way its unreal how hard the trigger is. You have a very nice outfit and they will shoot better than most of us can hold them. Jeff

ppc gun...........

good information above, and thatis a nice ,late model variation, by the serial number, as well as the fact it as done as a "slab side" which is the way they do it today......back in MY day, the Clarks, Wilsons, Pachmayrs, etc as well as about ANY shop I know or have worked with ,dealt with, built these ,wish I had a nickel for everyone we built, saw, used back in the early ,mid 70's....... usually ours ( and most) were built on a "K" frame, using a Douglas 'airgaged' barrel, various lengths, and for the most part we used a BoMar, Aristocrat, of whom evers' rib on the top...now we see more optics on them , like yours pictures, yes costly to build, the price of the gun, and then starting around $1200 and up, but they were built for competition, ergo, meant shot, and shot a LOT....resale values are about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the sum of the total of the parts...nice gun, and will shoot better than any of us can ..........
the main thing is that the BIG boys, all "signed" (marked) the barrels, gun in some way ,so without that that there is NO way to really know just "who/whom" built yours......

All this is great info. I'll probably be listing soon as Unknown build. Anyone's interested send me a message

As others have said, the barrel more than likely came from Brownells. I can't remember the name, possibly Barret, maybe not. they offered both round and slab side barrels. Haven't seen them there fore several years. The underlug is the larger Aristocrat model. The top of the barrel was probably drilled and tapped for the Aristocrat sight. The trigger stop originally had a rubber insert, and the stop could be adjusted to have the insert contact the frame first and then compress, mimicking a tight hand/ratchet setup.

I have a PPC gun made by Austin Behlert. Bought it from the gentleman who had it built for him. He had tried to sell it at the LGS with his pistol box. They were not interested, so I followed him out. We settled on $350 for it. It shoots as good as it did when new. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-hand-ejectors-1896-1961/455347-what-have-i-got.html So to answer your question, it is worth whatever someone will pay you for it. I have a Giles .38 Special built on a 1958 Colt .38 Super Government Model. I gave $1K for it and have been offered $1.5K for it. It just a matter of what the piece is worth to the buyer.

For price, there is a S&W 10-6 with a bull barrel and aristocrat rib for 400 a very nice satin finish with bull barrel fluted, a nice weapon priced I think very reasonable. Its on the Arkansas gun list on page 10 tonite. Jeff
