I have 5 semi auto's in 45 ACP with 3 being Sig's and 2 being Colt Governemnts. I was thinking of getting a S&W revolver that shoots 45 ACP because I have the reloading gear on hand and plenty of 45 ACP reloading components.

I asking the people up here who shoot a S&W revolver in 45 ACP to tell me their S&W model preference, barrel length recommendations, and if it's worth getting one.

Thanks,

Hello fellow Arkie
I have had several but my preference is the standard 6 1/2" 25-2 with the 5" 625 a close runner up. With the right load every one I have had would group 6 shots in a nickel.

+1 on the 6 1/2" Model 25-2:

Sir, I have a 6-1/2" 25-2. It's a good, accurate gun, but really big and heavy for the cartridge. FWIW, my preferences run more toward light 4-inch guns, so I'd look for a .45 ACP Mountain Gun.

JMHO.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Absolutely get one. My favorite is the 6 1/2 incher. Newer M-25's had 6 inch barrels.

Just about any 625 is good, but I like the three inch. The 625 has a round butt while the older N-frames are square.

Oh, man, that Pre-26 is absolutely stunning! I have a very well-worn pre-26 in a 5-inch, and it is one of my favorite guns. Accurate, easy to shoot, and I do carry it a lot. However, I have a Model 25 (Made in 1960) with the longer (6 1/2" bbl) that is an absolute tack driver. You will appreciate the longer barrel, even if it is harder to manage when on your belt. I find myself reaching for either of these two guns while my 1911 stays in the safe. Go figger!

My current favorite is this 3" Model 25-14.

With only 250 made it might be a little hard to find but they're out there.

This 4" Model 22-4 is also a sweet piece and makes a great woods gun in a crossdraw rig.

I suffered a wrist injury to my strong side about 12 years ago that caused me to "limp wrist" my 1911 .45ACP semi-auto. I reluctantly switched to a S&W 625. I wanted one with a 5" barrel, but settled for a 4". Wow! What a great revolver! 625-3 is accurate and dependable, as well as a lot of fun. I don't think you'll regret buying one.

Regards,

Dave

I have owned and fired 3"/4"/5"/6.5" Models 1917,25-2 and 625-3.

I tend to gravitate to the extremes. The M25-2 in 6.5 and the 625-3 in 3".

The 6.5 is a target shooters dream. The 3" is an excellent carry gun. With Hogue rubber fingergrove grips it is actually fun to shoot.

Regardless of what you choose, you will love the heck out of it.

All three of these are 45acp.

Hi,

I've owned and/or shot all the different lengths and they are all as fun to shoot, in their own way, as a good .22 handgun!

My favorite, hands down, is this 25-2 that was cut down to, back in the day, to a 3 1/4" barrel. The gunsmith failed to tell it that it no longer was a target revolver . . . and I'm not ABOUT to tell either!

Most times, standing/unsupported, it will do all six rounds into a single, ragged hole at ten yards!!! Plus, I've never felt a handgun so perfectly balanced for fast, action shooting matches . . . including pin matches. It is also blazingly fast out of the holster, and recovery time between targets is really fast too. My "ultimate" revolver.

It also has custom trigger work in both single and double action modes that is simply stunning to experience.

It is my favorite handgun of all time, and currently my only S&W .45ACP wheelgun. The others may get traded off occasionally for some other gun lust, but not this one! It will roll coke cans all day long too . . . at 75 yards.

I'm happy with my 5" 625. It's a nice gun to shoot.
If it was 6" i'd probably like it more.

+1 on the 625. 5" or 4" I do not think it will matter other than the 5" is discontinued. The 25s are sweet guns and I love blue with wood but for a work horse that is accurate and not hard to find the 625 gets my vote.
