Is anyone aware of a S&W Armorer School? S&W told me they are no longer going to offer them. To be compliant with Texas Commission of Law Enforcement rules I will need to be able to "examine" my revolvers annually if I want to continue to use them for my duty pistols.

Thanks in advance.

There are three very good armorers schools across the country. One of them is in Oklahoma. One is is Susanville, CA and one in Rochester, N.Y. I believe they are all associated with gunsmithing programs at community colleges. (This info is stale and could be out of date.)

You don’t need to be an armorer to remain compliant with TCOLE rules. The Texas Administrative Code 218.9 states: b) The annual firearms proficiency requirements shall include:
(1) an external inspection by the proficiency officer, range officer, firearms instructor, or gunsmith to determine the safety and functioning of the weapon(s);
(2) a proficiency demonstration in the care and cleaning of the weapon(s) used.

A basic function check is all that’s necessary.

Armorers schools are short classes on how to REPAIR firearms and keep them working.
Examining a firearm is to insure it's operating correctly.
Unless you're going to be fully disassembling and repairing a gun, an armorers class is over kill.

If you know how to load and fire it you can "examine" it for proper function.
Apparently Texas law means you need to have an instructor, range officer, or other qualified person to look at it.
This is nothing much more then the standard inspection that used to be done in the squad room when going on duty

Sadly, even the S&W factory doesn't appear to be able to initially produce a defect-free revolver on any sort of consistent basis. I can't imagine what level of skills would be taught in a current Revolver Armorer course, or who would teach it. It appears S&W would prefer that you send your troubled revolver back to the factory, to be further abused.
