A local auction company here in Va. had a fall firearms on line auction that closed this past Tuesday. A number of S&W revolvers where in it. My understanding is that a local collector consigned his collection. Since many on the forum ask about current prices I have compile a list. All were good to very good condition. The price includes 18% buyers premium.

Model 29-2 1439
Model 17-3 690
Model 17-3 678
Model 34 549
Model 36 543
Model 36 478
Model 10-5 with box 419
Model 10-5 336
Model 10-5 283

3 WWII M1 Carbines were in Auction (1-underwood and 2 Winchesters - Corrected Price average $1,126
2 Marlin 39A were in auction - Average price 585

The model 10's went for lower than I'd expect for good conditional and $1,400 seems kind of crazy for a 29-2 unless there was something special about it. But otherwise seems reasonable.

I was looking to buy an M1 carbine 10 years ago but thought they were kind of high when prices around $600. I've recent seen auction where nice ones go in the $1,200+ range. Who's buying at that price? In my 30 to 40 trips to the range every year I don't think I've ever seen anyone shooting one.

I thought the Model 10's went cheaper than I expected. I corrected my original post on the M1 Carbine prices. Forgot to add the 18% premium. Average price for the three was $1126 each.

Thanks for info. Was it "in person" only or could folks phone in or bid on line? Bbl lengths would be nice( not to be a downer) I've attended several local auctions that after folks "run low on cash" prices/bidding falls off resulting in good buys.

On line auction only (not in person) and the Auction House holds a FFL so bidders could be a distance away. They had an inspection day before the close but I didn't go. Lots of high quality long guns and shotguns as well as some nice semi-automatic handguns so bidders may have had to choose if they were also in the market for others. If you want to see the results and descriptions send me a PM and I will give you the website of the auction company. They have all the past auctions so you can see details of each lot and price realized.

Great information.

I would love to have bought one of the Winchester M1 Carbines for anywhere near the price quoted.

Yes, any Winchester M1 carbine in average condition usually goes for a little more on gb.

Tom - was that Linkous auction?

That's just crazy IMHO. They're interesting guns but nothing that special. I understand the collector interest, but at this point I'd think most collector interest in underpowered second tier WW2 firearms wouldn't be quite that strong.

$1,200 ? I am seeing $1500 to $4,500. Still looking for one.

I see an M1 carbine getting shot pretty much every time I'm at the state gameland range or at the 100 yard service rifle match. ;)

The demand for carbines seems to have dropped off slightly but is still pretty strong.
$1100 should get you a "shooter" with all GI parts with some degree of wear - depending on where you are and who you know. Otherwise the 1500 is to be expected. And I agree that Winchesters seem to be more desirable even though they are hardly the rarest.

The higher prices ought to bring something more collectible, which generally means parts that match what it had when it left the original factory. Or, depending on the buyer, the parts it had on it when it left government service - any legit government service - not just US. I think there are also buyers that are paying premiums for nicely refinished carbines either because they want that look or they don't know that these are are heavily restored. Doesn't matter - its added value to them and that's what drives prices.

However, the demand for "original" is such that there is a brisk business in fake parts. These are reproduction and replacement parts that certain sellers work over and sell as "original" production. :(

Commerical production M1s tend to go for less, even ones made with all original production parts.

The Carbine Collectors Club has webpages and a forum that is well worth looking through to get some sense of the various manufactures and items that tend to be faked. If you're a shooter and/or reloader, there's a pretty fair number of posts about that too in the forum.

Some of these smaller, local auction houses have many local collectors and quite often have some outstanding guns at auction. It would be a benefit, (I think), if we were allowed a place here where these could be listed for the membership to be aware of. I know, no live auction, etc. is part of the rules, but just a list of current auctions and dates with the web site wouldn't be a gun listing.

Sure, if you're looking for NIB. I just looked at gunbroker and see a number completed auctions in the last month in the $1,000 to $1,250 range for good condition shooters.

Here's one that went for $915 a few days ago.
Just a moment....

Oh I will look into that, Everything I see on Gunbroker is at least 2500 to 4500 for something nice.

As far as Model 29-2 for $1,499 good luck with that. I have seen two sell for over 4K in the last month on Gunbroker. Granted that is a bidding war, but would assume 2K for a nice one. Box papers ,tools all ads to the price. Not to mention unfired condition. That's why the last couple 29-2 sold for over 4K
