Hey,

Over time, I've called S&W a few times to ask how many Mod. 915s were made.

I always get the same answer: "They were made 92-94 but there's no record of how many were made."

I tried again today and was put on hold for more than 7 minutes. Yes, I was watching the clock.

The hard working rep. came back on the phone and told me, "I tried everything, including talking to different people in different departments that I was sure would know. But no one did. Sorry."

Does anyone else find this strange?

I mean, sfter all, S&W made them. And they have a list of serial numbers and can tell you when individual 915s were made.

S&W has made some very decent firearms but their record keeping seems lacking.

92 - 94 isn't exactly ancient history. There has to be a record somewhere.

Oh they have the records somewhere, I'm just not so sure they have the energy or brains to properly access them.

About the 915, I'll say this: all the evidence suggests that they made a GUZILLION of these. The 915 is a great gun and a fantastic value. It is also the polar opposite of scarce.

I bet if you made a top-ten list of S&W semiauto pistol single models made in the largest volume, a 915 is middle of that list.

The 915 is a heckuva gun but if anyone ever suggests that this model is rare, in any ways that "rare" is defined, they are wrong.

Hey Sevens,

I know "many" were made. I just want to know how many.

A GUZZILION strikes me as kind of a high, rounded off number. :) But I guess it could be right.

Anyway, it's a better number than what S&W gave me.

I don't have one so that means they only made 3.

Aha!

So Sevens was wrong!!!

The Mod. 915 IS a rare pistol with only three known to exist.

And mine is mint with box and papers.

The box is correct, though it doesn't appear to be.

This was one of the last 915s made and it was made AFTER S&W switched over from cardboard boxes to plastic hinged boxes.

Oh boy! I'm rich.

27,822 to be exact. I called SW..was put on hold for 2 Hours, when the guy came back on the phone he said "Didn't you just call me about this, its 27,822 and 1/3", then he hung up on me. I posted 28,822 because I rounded down.

Mrnurse,

The thread has taken kind of a humorous twist so I can't tell if you're kidding or not.

Is 27,822 the actual number that were made or are you joking?

AND, if the number is real, where the heck did you find it? Even the people at S&W say they don't know the number.

Thanks.

Thanks for nothing.

I'd tell you what I think of you, but I'd get suspended. :)

You can bet your bottom dollar that S & W has to keep detailed records of every gun produced by model and serial number. That said, they have no interest in counting production numbers of 25+ year old guns from the archives. Such information is of interest to gun geeks but doesn't add to the bottom line or get new product out the door.

One prominent example of this philosophy (or lack thereof) is the company no longer employs a Historian. :(

Yeah murph,

Customer-centric they ain't.

People do what is required to reap the reward they desire (at least I remember something from college economics). The problem here is, you didn't offer enough reward for the information you seek!

When I figure out what you tried to say, and why, I'll try to act on your what you said.

Should I have offered to pay for the info? Is that it?

Are production numbers provided on history letter requests for later, standard production pistols?

John

If the information is known, I think. Less common guns seem to have exact production numbers (think PC, Lew Horton, Ashland, RSR) but it seems to be uncommon for any other models.

My interpretation of this statement is - volunteer to search all their records and calculate the production figures for every model they made, in exchange for finding out how many 915s were made. Feel free to limit your offer to just semi-auto pistols. ;)
