Hi folks,
I going to get one of these pistols in the near future for
carry. In your experience, what is the difference in the
triggers of these two fine pistols?

Both have similar triggers with the SD series being a little heavier. Both will smooth out more and become lighter through use (dry or live fire). Both have (or will have) upgrade options from Apex to make them lighter and smoother. I don't think you can go wrong with either model, but the more expensive M&P also has better aftermarket support and a better resale value.

I personally like the longer pull of the SD for carry. I feel safer carrying and have less of a worry of accidental firing. The thinner and slightly smaller SD seems better suited for concealing as well. Either will do the job, of course, so it all falls on personal preference.

I carry my M&P 9c in my DeSantis Mini Scabbard or my Blackhawk Serpa (Level 2) OWB holsters with no problems at all. The full size works just as well but rides a bit higher on my right side. It's fairly easy to conceal either gun with the right holster.

As for accidental firing, the M&P has a trigger safety which makes it darn near impossible to fire without meaning to. Any well designed holster will cover the trigger to prevent your finger from accidentally grabbing it and with a bit of training, it's perfectly safe (for you) to carry, even with a round in the chamber.

Just my opinion.

I'm talking more along the lines of adrenaline taking over before your mind realizes what's going on. Forget and put the finger on the trigger and, BANG, didn't even realize you applied much pressure. SD trigger is just a bit longer and heavier and makes me feel a little more comfortable. I have trained with my 40c (very well broken in) and have had accidental double fires when doing drills and shooting under pressure. Trigger pull is short and very light on mine and when the adrenaline is pumping 3.5 lbs feels like nothing. I imagine I would be in the same boat under pressure in a SD situation. I have done the same drills under the same stresses with my SD9 and SD40 without the issue. I still double tap all my targets and finish in my specified times, just no unintentional discharges. Like I said it's personal preference. I still like my 40c but now it is usually range only and rarely gets carried unless I'm needing the slightly smaller profile.

The trigger mechanisms are completely different between the 2 guns. The M&P trigger is far more "tunable" the SD trigger can be polished for smoothness but you can't tune where the trigger bar engages the sear, you can't adjust the reset point, you can't make the trigger as light to pull. So, for a combat gun I actually prefer the SD. For a target or game gun I like the M&P.
