What is a transitional model? I'm still learning about the 39's history

My SW .40VE

AWESOME pics of beautiful guns, guys. You gotta love a S&W! :) Thanks for posting. I picked up this used SW.40VE at a gun show several months back. Love its ease of take down, reliability, 14+1 capacity and feel. Getting used to long hard trigger pull. I might do the spring job, not sure yet.
When was this gun last produced and replaced?
Thanks,
Rod

It's an early 39-2 with some features of the model 39, such as the hole in the hammer, and the non relieved front strap, just above the magwell. The magazine baseplates are longer on the model 39 and early 39-2 (transitional).

Here's my two S&W semi-autos. I just recently left California for Nevada, and so I'm new at this. I also have a 25 yr old 686 which I used in a brief stint with the LA County Sheriffs Dept.

I'm an S&W semi-auto rookie as I only recently bought my first, a 22A-1 Talo edition but it has lots of revolver relatives living in the same safe with it.

I inquired on here about them before I bought it and was told only a skilled marksman can wring better accuracy out of a Model 41. It shoots a whole lot better than I do!

I have several Kimber 1911s and recently wanted to add an S&W to my collection but I yearned for a target model 38 Super and S&W doesn't offer one, so I bought another Kimber.

Here are my smiths.

3906 early production, fixed sights.

3913 early production, Smith & Wesson performance shop modified. Mag safety delete, polished barrel/feed ramp, trigger job, factory installed Novak night sights.

Will be picking up a 3904 tomorrow, pics to come.

Regards
Vince

I love the background in the pic..what city is that if you don't mind..or was it photoshop magic? Either way it looks cool as does the pistol.
Edit: Duh I think I just answered my own question as that gun does walk on water... at 1st I thought it was just a really shiny epoxy floor.

Thanks, I live on the seventh story in a highrise in downtown Atlanta. The prominent building in the background happens to be the Bank of America.

I guess my glass patio table makes the guns look like they are sitting on water. I love taking photos out there of everything, except my AR. Don't want the locals getting any wrong ideas! Lol

EDIT: Have a Hogue grip sleeve coming in the mail. Would like to replace the sights with a pair of night sights (green/red) but haven't looked into it much.

My S&W's

I love the 3rd gens. I just picked up the 669 2nd gen. Apparently they don't get a lot of attention because they are stilled priced reasonably. Sweet pistol at a great price.
