I have had this frame since 1989. My dad was a gunsmith that passed away. I carried it around as a kid. I have been carrying it around with my stuff. I thought about cutting it in half at one time and trying to sell to a grip maker.
The barrel is bulged and unuseable.i didn't really wanted to trash it.
I found some parts kits for sale that are complete. I am thinking about building this thing up over the winter. I found a 2 in kit.
My question is how hard is it to install the barrel. I have reassembled many pistols before but not installed a barrel. Also would a model 10 work on this. They have both.
This would be for me and not for sale.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated

You have a piece of a piece of history that is worth saving!
You need to know that you are dealing with a M&P "Long Action" K frame. I would suggest you obtain a cut kit of a Victory model. This would provide the parts including side plate and barrel. The kit may also include stocks.

Side plate fit may be an issue. If buying a kit you should at least have one that matches the type hammer block of the parts set. You will also have parts that have worked together.
A kit of parts from a "cut" revolver will provide a barrel still in a frame stub that you can use to learn how to best remove and install a replacement barrel.
This forum as well as the manual by Kuhnhausen can be useful guides.
Good luck!

I just sent a PM with a link to a parts kit that I think would work with this frame....

You need to do everything I did here with the addition of fitting a sideplate. That will probably be the most time consuming part of the project.

You'll need a frame wrench and the appropriate inserts to remove/install the barrel. There are several places online that rent them, or if you would share your location there may be someone local who would let you use theirs. DO NOT just stick a hammer handle into the frame window.

Share your progress with us and post lots of pictures. There are folks here that have forgotten more about Smith revolvers than you and I will ever know....we'll all help.

Be patient and remember to have fun :D

I built a Victory just like yours from a bare frame and parts I gathered. If you need any help, contact me. There is some expertise involved here to fit everything properly: barrel, cylinder, side plate, etc.. It is not just as easy as a lego set. I have some spare barrels and cylinders if you're missing any of these parts. Probably grips and the action parts too. Good luck and Happy Holidays!
