Salvaged 97 Win.

I traded for a very nice late production Win. 97/ 12 g. I got a killer deal on it because
some shoemaker did a home poly choke job on it. The barrel was 30"fc, looked like
a bench grinder was used to thin muzzle to go inside poly choke.. Also annoying was the 5 degree angle choke was off of parallel, not to mention sloppy braze job.. Other than wood needing refinished the blue and running gears were in top shape. I saved
about 25" of the barrel. I was going to put sights on it. Gunsmith talked me into choke
tubes. I refinished wood, it looks pretty good. Now all I have to do is figure out what I'm
going to use it for. Might make good turkey gun.

If that were mine, I chop the barrel to 18" or 20" leave it as is and put behind the seat of my truck.

Can it be slam fired?

Used one that was cut to 20" to hunt pheasant. Quick and fun to shoot. I like the looks of yours.

I've owned a few of them. Before the SASS shooting thing you could find them for 50 to 100 bucks pretty often.

Have you shot it much? If I remember correctly the hammer pinched the web of my hand a few times.

And lots of old time turkey hunters used the M-97. As did the fellers who shot at turkey shoots for meat and money.

Yours is a very nice looking set up. I love the screw in chokes.

The problem you will find with leaving your barrel that long is that when you take it down it won't fit in a small tool box or your brief case (like my 18 1/4" barrel will). All M-97's will slam fire, and with a properly lubricated action, will be faster than any semi auto. There Is a guy that sells magazine spring and follower kits that take you up to 6+1 shots. You now have one of the best pump guns for defense as well as hunting, and you should try skeet with it too. My first 97 is a 1904 take-down cut to 18 1/4", my second is a 1954 take-down, like new, with a factory Poly-choke, that I haven't bothered to cut yet. Enjoy to the fullest! Ivan

I have two 97s, both have full length barrels and I use them for Cowboy Shooting.

I bought a late 12 ga 97 at a local auction that is in excellent
condition for far less money than it should have brought because it
had a poly choke with the outer tube missing. I just cut the barrel to
24" and put a bead on it. I have used it to take several pheasants. I
really enjoy hunting with it. Since it's a very old design I don't expect
to ever shoot any short magnums in it.

I have nice one with 32" full choke barrel. About all I've shot in it is 00 Buckshot(deer hunting) and it has performed well. Mine is a takedown from 1919. I also have a "junker" takedown that I've never bothered to fix. Just hanging onto it incase I need spare parts.
