Hello,

I am considering buying a Glock for home defense (sorry :-) ) as well as a small frame S&W revolver for self defense as a ccw. Is there a chance I can use the same ammunition for the Glock pistol and the S&W revolver ? What catridge would that be ? Will the .45 auto do the job ?

Many thanks for your suggestions !

Welcome. There are revolvers that can shoot 9mm or 45acp. In which case you could get a Glock that fired the same round.

You might want to hold off on the Glock purchase until they've resolved the ejection issues that some of them have. Check out the Glock forums or do a Google search on "glock ejection issues" and you'll see what I mean. I've got a G19 with the problem and just got it back from the gunsmith with mixed results. I'm not promoting S&W, just wanted to make sure that you were aware of the issue.

As noted above, if you want to use the same ammo in a revolver and a Glock you are limited to the 9mm or .45 ACP. I would recommend that you get some training in firearms use before buying your weapon. Try a local gun club or a CCW trainer.

Depending on your definition of "small frame", you would be looking for a 5-shot model 940 in 9 mm (not currently in production). There are also a medium frame 9 mm and larger frame .40 and .45 revolvers available, but again some of these are not current production.

You can get a 625 still, but it will be pretty large. They shoot the .45 ACP round, like the Glock 21.
I would just tell you that if you like revolvers and want a small one, get a J-frame in .38 Special. If you like Glocks and want one, get one in whatever other caliber you like. 9mm is relatively inexpensive, to a G19 or 17 will work great.
There's no real advantage to common calibers from pistol to revolver, simply because you will not be reloading your revolver from you pistol magazine, or you pistol from a speeloader. If you have some departmental requirement to carry a specific caliber, then it makes sense, but you will be missing out on a whole wonderful world of guns if you don't get a S&W in .38 special.

Come on guys, 10mm.

So the 610 may be a little hard to find, it does exist. It is smaller than an X frame and the same size as one of the 45acp ones.

If the Glock is for home defense and the S&W for carry I'd suggest the Glock 17 and the S&W 940.

If reversed, with the S&W as HD and the Glock for a carry then I'd suggest either a S&W revolver in 45 ACP (Model 22, 25, 625) or in 10mm (model 610) and a Compact Glock 36 (45 ACP slimline) or 29 (10mm).

Good luck with the purchases, and get back to us if ya can. :)

I see no reason to have one weapon for carry and another for home defense unless another person in the home prefers a different action type than you. The Glock 36 or 19 makes a lot of sense for for both applications. Yes, the .45 auto will certainly do the job but a revolver in that caliber is going to be a little on the large size. Good luck in choosing.

Look into older used Glocks for 9mm or if you want a 45 any production Glock 21 or 30 is good

The 3 7/16" S&W 610 is a superior platform for many range matches. It can't be considered a small frame though....

For 10mm or .40 cal S&W use, if it fits your hand well, everything from bowling pins to ICORE to Steel Challenge as well as home defense, either caliber is readily available in Glock models.

Easily one of my two favorite revolvers.

The other 'favorite' for me is the 8-shot 627/327 in 38/357.

So many guns.....so little time....

In the generation 4 Glocks, the only model without a well document history of problems is the 21. I have been a Glock fan for years, but would not buy another as things stand. While there have also been issued with the M&P pistols, they are as whole doing a lot better.

If you want a SMALL frame revolver then 9mm is the only choice.

More to the point, WHY is using the same cartridge important to you?

If you're just starting out and want a little gun to carry and a house gun I'd go 442/642 and then just get a larger framed 4-6 inch Smith in .38/357. Or get a compact Glock and use it for both.

How about reversing things?

Charter Arms makes a nice .40 S&W revolver and you have a plethora of various and sundry auto loaders to choose from.
