Saw a Jolly Roger flag flying today

When I was in High School our mascot was The Buccaneer.

Considering how rough our District was, by that time, it was somehow very fitting. :(

I have a couple of variants here in the living room. For outdoor summer parties, the skull and crossbones are good.

But then on the jeeping trips, where many of them camp I have along a "pirate queen" flag to fly over a buddy's camper. If he isn't keeping good watch, up it goes over flagpole!

I went out this morning to fill up and get my car washed. I saw a restaurant flying a good-sized Skull and Crossbones flag on the 25'+/- flag pole along side their building. It was fairly prominent.

I haven't seen the Jolly Roger fly in quite some time. I used to see them while out and about on the boat occasionally. Strangely though, this restaurant is a pizza-kinda-southwest cowboy-sorta-Mexican-like-place. Their menu is a hodgepodge of different cuisine, none of which is seafaring or pirate themed and he's about 10 miles from any navigable waters!

Does anyone have an opinion on the Skull and Crossbones flag? Did I miss the PC police making it taboo to fly it at some point? Has it fallen from "fashion"? Do you guys see them around?

I was just a bit surprised to see it and don't know what to think about it. I'll stop into that joint tomorrow for a quick lunch and ask the owner "what's up with that".

Arrrghhh matey. Be it talk like a pirate day? If noot then mayhaps the scurvey dogs just fergot te take'er doon from last year eh?

My father-in-law (Jean Lafitte Spiller) is a descendant of Jean Lafitte -
the Lafittes were schooled in Nevis, a small island near St Kitts.
Lake Charles has a large spring festival spread over two weeks in late April/early May known as Contraband Days and Jolly ROgers are flown everywhere -buildings, from the city's light poles, on boats, etc.
Lafitte had a base on Contraband Bayou here in Lake Charles, just a short distance from the Gulf of Mexico. Five blocks from our home is Barbe High School (a football and baseball powerhouse), the mascot:
Bucaneers or "Barbe Bucs" for short. No one here gets wrapped around the axle about the display of the Jolly Roger. It's all in fun.

You sure you don't have this particular restaurant confused with Long John Silver's ?

Go to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida's "Billy Bowlegs" festival and you'll see lots of Jolly Rogers flying.

They're quite popular in Florida's semi tropical environment.

A couple of pics of Billy Bowlegs fesival 2005 as I cruised through a navigation nightmare two Jolly Rogers on the left side of RH pic. Many more out of sight. There were Two replica pirate ships complete with cannons blasting away with blanks, probably a couple hundred of well filled Bikinis all over the place, Sorry, no close ups .

The Sea of Cortez had it's share of Corsairs, Privateers and Pirates. The afternoon breeze that aided the more light, maneuverable rigs of the Englishmen Cavendish, Drake and Rodgers is still called the "Coromuel" which is the mangled pronunciation of Cromwell, the British leaders of the era.
You can meet Choyeros there in the Baja named Smith and Cavendish etc.

There is a book, The Empire of Blue Water, on Capt Henry Morgan's exploits in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, including the overland treck across Panama to sack the Panama City. They were a rough bunch. Good reading!

So, I stopped into the restaurant today and caught up with the owner and asked him the burning question regarding the Skull and Crossbones.

His reply...."Oh that. Yeah, my daughter won it at one of the fireman's carnivals last summer. Shooting darts I think. I found it when I was cleaning out my car and figured I fly it awhile".

Who'da thunk it?!?!?!?
