A dealer at the gun show today had a 4 inch blued Model 28 HP for $450 OTD. Stocks were rubber Pachmyers (is that spelled right?). Mechanically, it seemed fine (no damaged screws; no bent ejector rod; no bent crane; everything seemed to lock up as it should). The finish was so-so.

Near the muzzle, about 1/2 an inch of blueing was worn or damaged. It could have been holster wear, but it looked more like some chemical had removed the finish. (Maybe some miscreant's blood from getting clobbered with the barrel by a determined deputy? At least it would make a good story.) There was no box, no extra wooden grips - just the gun. It needed a good cleaning.

Is this an average price for a shooter 28? It seemed a little steep to me for a mediocre finish.

I think the price is geographic. I bought a 6 inch 28-2 in jacksonville florida with a leupold pistol scope, rings and wooden grips for $365 otd. I almost ran out the door screaming. just had to buy a rear sight for it. Doeboy

Seems a bit high..

to me for a shooter 28-2 but it depends on the market for them in your area. They are very good guns.

The spelling is 'Pachmayr'

Thanks for the responses. By the way, are used factory grips for the 28 very expensive?

I have three 28-2s, so that tells you how much I like them.

For some reason, Model 28s are inexpensive - for a gun of such fantastic quality. Suits me fine, that enables me to own several.
I was offered a very good 28-2 for $375 (plus tax) last year, and although I don't need a fourth one, I almost bought it.
The 6" one shown was bought for me by my wife off Gunbroker for about $400.
Nearly all Model 28s will have finish issues. That's because they are tools, not collectible toys. They are tools because they are such great revolvers. And a great revolver is worth $450, but I'd offer $380, and make a big deal over the finish.

In my area of California that price would be a excellent buy. Shooter grade model 28s are going for $600 and more. If I found one for in the $400 range I would jump on the revolver.

Good luck,
roaddog28

Just bought a like NIB 4" 28-2 (although there is a line on the cylinder) w/box and manual, but no cleaning tool on a PPT for $650 in Calif. Not the best deal, but it sure is a nice gun...

I found some factory grips for mine in an old gun shop while on vaction for about $25. Actually found 2 sets but I tell you I like the aphends that I found at the same gun shop a year ago. Looks a lot like the gun you see at the top of the page about the s&w forum logo. I put one set on my 58 and the other I put up. Doeboy

re:28's are tools.

Going deer hunting this evening. Its raining. I picked up the 6" 27 then picked up the 6" 28 and dropped it into my holster. Truely a working gun especially if I have to track one in the rainy yuck after dark.
Our season came in today and runs to Jan 01. I have a comfy tower to sit in this rainy evening.

I would consider $450 an OK price. Anything below $400 would be a very good price in my neck of the woods. I picked up my 28-2 a couple of years ago for $350. The dealer I bought it from gets a lot of used stuff from estate type sales and is nice enough to pass on the savings.

As described and priced, I believe it would sell fairly quickly in my area. I personally think it is a little high but they get snapped up quickly around here.

Model 28 don't last long around here either, no matter what they cost.

The wife and I have shopped for guns from West (BY GOD!) Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and other states, and Model 28s are hard to come by. The story is always the same: "Sure, we get 'em in once in a while, but they don't stay long...."

In my neck of the woods, Model 28's are everywhere. I can walk out the door and go to two different shops and between them look at six different Model 28's of both barrel lengths. I know where there is a shooter, but a nice shooter, for $365 and near mint 28's for under $550. For me, I would pass on that gun.

Mr. LaPell, sir:
We have an immutable rule on this Forum that you can't make statements like "In my neck of the woods you can find M28s at give-away prices..." without putting your location in your profile, or at least mentioning it in your post! And if you don't believe this, I never lie and I'm always right! :D
