I was at my local shop trading a couple bottom feeders for a 3" 686 3-5-7, and another fellow was in there interested in one of the 5" 3-5-7 models. The owner had a couple of those, and let him pick between one from the back and one from the case. The one from the back had the 357 grips unique to the model, but a fluted cylinder- according to the S&W website, all of these 3-5-7 units have unfluted cylinders. Apparently this one somehow left the factory with the wrong cylinder.
The owner said he had ordered multiples of the same model, so it wasn't a regular 686 Plus that had the wrong grips installed (although I suppose there's no other difference).
I'd read of some revolvers having incorrect parts for the model (remember seeing one once of a 7 shot gun with a 6 shot cylinder... or maybe it was the other way around). First time I'd seen one. Wonder if it will be particularly collectible.
