One day last week I was driving home on a busy 6 lane road. I was in the center lane of the three on my side sitting at a red light. In the left lane was a late model Lexus SVU and behind it was a new BMW SUV. When the light changed and before I could even take my foot from the brake to the gas pedal the BMV blew his horn at the Lexus. The Lexus started moving slowly and the BMV rammed him from behind, obviously on purpose. The Lexus gave him right turn signal and pulled over the the right side of the road. The BMW took off at a high rate of speed and another car that had seen the ramming took off after it. Then the Lexus took off after the BMW too. The BMW went by me and changed lanes in front of me with the 2 cars right behind. These 3 cars are flying down the road weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed like you see on one of those cop shows. They went down a couple of lights and the BMW made a quick right and turned into a car wash with the other two right behind. I kept going but was sure I was going to read about a gunfight in the paper the next morning. People are crazy nowadays!

In Vegas it's pretty clear that there is a large group of drivers who refuse to acknowledge that the traffic is back to pre-COVID levels and that commuting is going to take longer.

The "me" mentality can be summed up in this incident that happened to me recently on US-95 south through Vegas. I'm in the left lane at 5-10 over passing a tight line of cars (all tailgating) running below the limit :confused::confused: (there's a first time for everything). Kid comes hauling up behind me in a VW Jetta and starts blowing the horn and flashing his lights. So what am I supposed to do, make like smoke and disappear? It's unsafe to move right because I would be braking into an inadequate gap, no doubt incurring the justified wrath of those in that lane. So Mr Speed crosses the double white line into the HOV lane and blows by, waving his arms and blowing the horn some some at a good limit +20. Really? I had two more cars to pass which would have left me clear to move right in about 20 seconds. I wonder what Mr Speed did with those 20 seconds that day.

I drive regularly on I-495, the Capital Beltway that encircles Washington, D.C. Every single time I'm on that road, I feel like I'm in the middle of a Mad Max movie. (The late, great G. Gordon Liddy used to refer to it as the "eight-lane death strip.")

Driver behavior since the pandemic is atrocious. It's like everything else in our society these days: People do whatever they feel like doing, whenever they feel like doing it, with no concern about, or fear of, consequences.

This past March, on I-695, the Baltimore Beltway, six construction workers were killed when an Acura collided with a VW Jetta while trying to change lanes; the Acura was launched through the air and into the construction area. Last week the report on the accident was released and both drivers arrested. Turns out they were apparently racing each other, with the VW trying to prevent the Acura from moving into the left lane, and were doing over 100 mph -- in a construction zone! -- when the crash occurred.

I love to drive, but nowadays, I get in the right lane, engage the cruise control at a speed that won't get me run over, and avoid eye contact with other drivers...

Something similar happened here a few weeks ago and they ended up at a charging station near my home. One man was shot and died,no charges against the shooter so far. Not thinking with their bigger brain for sure!

Traffic is crazy, people are on edge & everyone is carrying; legally or otherwise. I hug the right lane and try to mind my own business. Most of my driving is limited to the grocery store, medical appointments or other errands close to home.

As of this week there have been 52 shootings on the expressways in Chicago. That is an improvement over recent years which have gone over 200. Some are the result of beefs that started elsewhere, but road rage contributes too. With respect to Robert Heinlein not all armed societies are polite.

I see something crazy almost every time I drive.
I try to stay out of the right lane unless I'm about to exit. Too many idiots & nut cases trying to merge onto the freeway who either don't know or care that the car already on the freeway has right of way.
I hang out in the next lane over most of the time.
But it isn't any better on the surface streets. People drive 40mph through the 25mph residential zones, and they'll tailgate and practically push you if you follow the 25mph speed limit.
They don't observe the rules of the road at 4-way stops. Hell, a lot of them don't even come close to making a complete stop.
I've always loved driving, but these days, not so much.

In my last job I had to travel the Baltimore Beltway, I-695, to get to my office in Towson, MD north of Baltimore. The 1st working day after I officially retired I was so thankful I didn't have to run that crazy circuit anymore. I suspect the fact that my black Grand Marquises looked like unmarked patrol cars probably kept me from getting a lot of grief from other drivers.

Yup, my "unmarked" cruiser could be ID'd from a mile away. Every time I got behind the wheel drivers behaved until they thought I could no longer see them.

I'm not sure why I am even posting, except to witness part of reality. I live on Cape Cod and drive to Boston fairly often, in the morning rush hour, returning in less traffic. People around here drive 80 mph, sometimes in the left lane, and signal a desire to pass by getting closer than one car-length (at 80 mph).

I have witnessed no road rage, and very few accidents. Except for the tailgating, most folks seem pretty civilized. I drive on major commuter highways. I have no idea why everything is going so well, but there it is.

???

Lexus SUV...BMW SUV...There's your answer. Rich people in Virginia that don't carry guns. Try that with a Ford PU and a CHevy pickup in North Dakota. Ain't gonna happen. Never had a problem with someone raming Old Blue from behind-otherwise they'd get a taste of trailer hitch.

A couple of months ago, going some place new so watching for the exit, was in the right lane of a three lane passing a highway entry ramp, everyone doing maybe a steady 45 or so, cars merging regularly, everybody well spaced. Checked my rear mirror and the guy who has just pulled onto the highway behind me is flipping me off...

I'm thinking, "What the heck is wrong with this guy?"

He soon zoomed past me.

I ignored him, of course, but found the experience unpleasant.
