Say what you will about the South...

I worked my entire career in west central Florida and when I retired I moved up North.... to North Florida.

Got away from the crowds and moved to the backwoods, where drivers use all of their fingers when they wave to you. ;)

Richmond is as far as I have ventured in many years-and the weather there sucks. I somehow confused it with the Shenandoah Valley, which is the oasis of the mid Atlantic IMV. Now as to P'burg, I remember back in the day when their river there caught fire; that's always kept them off of my schedule of places to visit.

If weather was the only factor I would leave Illinois today and move somewhere with warmer winters (but not too warm, I lived in south Texas for years and found the heat intolerable). But right now, more by chance than anything else, 3 of my four grown kids along with 8 of my 10 grandkids live within two hours of where I am. Moving south would separate me from family more than I or my wife would want to tolerate. The older I get, the more important being with family matters. So for now I guess I will tolerate living in the worst state of the country.

My guess is that as more of my grandkids reach their teenage years they will have less and less time or interest in spending time with Grandpa, so moving will be easier. But I just might not live that long or be just too damn old to pick up and start anew somewhere other than here.

I think the solution is for me to just go and buy that new motorcycle that I have been thinking about, plus a bunch of new guns and stop thinking about moving!

We moved from NYC to Louisiana back in 1996. And for years after that people would say "you ain't from around here" now after almost 20 years down here don't hear that saying much anymore. Frank

Ha! If you move back to NYC, they will say.."you ain't from around here?".

My parents retired north to VT and then planned to move into a retirement community still further north in NH. Dad didn't live long enough for that, but Mom's there and she loves it. She seems to be of the opinion that if the winter temps don't drop into the minus double digits (Fahrenheit scale), then the place isn't fit for human habitation.

Last year I spent a month visiting family in Alabama just outside of Montgomery. It was very pretty country but what I liked the most was the people I met there. Maybe I was fortunate but the people there were the most polite and helpful I have been around in years. Sure beat the rudeness of some Californians and transplants I have come across and I've lived here all my life. If I could I'd move there in a heartbeat and take my chances with the weather. I haven't experienced the summer heat there yet. Here there is no fall nor spring it goes from very hot to cold then from cold to very hot with no in between. It's a wet foggy cold and a dry heat. I hate it here. But aging in laws and my Mom is in her 80's. They won't leave so I can't, yet.

You're confusing Pittsburgh with Cleveland. Never had a river fire here. Nice walleye about a half mile up the river from downtown though.

Say what you will about -35 F, It keeps the riff-raff away!!!

And up here in the frozen tundra the bugs don't get so dang big.

And slows down the mosquitos.

Amen.

I consider SC to be part of the South... :D

It is a matter of perspective. From a WI point of view Kentucky and Tennessee are the south. Right now in Fall you could not pry me out of WI. But I may have a different feeling come January depending on how much snow this year brings. Always meant to take a vacation to the warm south in the Winter to see what it would be like but I just ain't gotten round to it yet.

But there ain't nothing in Waxahachie. I had a brother that lived there for a time.

My wife and I went in a cruise with a couple from Waxahachie, TX. Of course when he pronounced it... it sure didn't sound like it's spelled. As for moving south..we want to get out of the cold and snow.. but West not South for us. AZ or NV.

Y'all are always WELCOME here in Nashville Tn.! Always a top 10 choice of places to visit and live.
Wanted to move to the Nashville area two and a half years ago but wife was kind of nervous about moving understandably. Now Tennessee is number 2 behind Texas in relo people, now have lost all my unrealized value and potential gains.

You might want to re-check your river history before maligning a fine city like Cleveland :) (hometown)

Not maligning the city of Cleveland. Although the city has had a run of bad luck in football for the last 50 years. I actually think Cleveland is a very nice town. Never suffered the downturn like Pittsburgh did in the 80's. Good industrial base and a great downtown, after its renaissance.

Back in 2011 Zambelli fireworks folks set the Allegheny on fire as part of an event. I have lived here most of my life and have never heard of this fire of which you speak, and I can find no history of our rivers catching fire on their own. So as to this slander of the Pittsburgh river, proof is required of you or retribution comes you way. I'll root for Cincy tonite....naw, that ain't happening.

I'm a native Buckeye and have been in most states, I spent some
time in West Texas. I think I would like to live there. Always had
a soft spot for Texas anyway, since my Pappy told me they pitched in and helped Monroe County win the Second World War.
