If there ever was a post that you can, take it for what it's worth, this is one of them.
I have 2 very close personal friends who are full blood, Ottawa "Indians," actually both,
one in 1976 & the other in 1978 asked me to "cut blood" with them, something I
thought only happened in the movies. After we became "Brothers" this
pale face was in and was treated like one of their own by their real Families....
Both of these friends were born & raised in northern Michigan so came from
an enviroment where their Band's history was known, including many of
their Legends, which brings me to the OP's topic.
One night, many years ago, I was with one of these friend's at one of
his relatives where a group of his Family were partying. We were all feeling
pretty good, joking & laughing, just having a good time......
At one point someone mentioned something that
I had never heard of before, they said "Bear-Walk."
When those two words were mentioned everybody got real quiet and when
I looked around to see what was going on I noticed everybody looking
"kinda funny." Even being young & dumb I knew enough to keep my mouth
shut, at least right then & there. Over the course of a few minutes
the party got back to normal, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
When my friend & I left I asked, "What's the deal with this Bear-Walk thing?"
He said, you know it as Bigfoot and we believe that they do
exist, but not in the sense that most would understand.....
He went on to say that they believe, Bear-Walk, is the spirit of a Medicine Man
who can come back from the dead and has chosen a Bear-like form, basically
a Bear that walks like a man, hence the term "Bear-Walk."
He added that the reason no body has ever been found is that, while the Medicine Man
does take on an earthly body, he is after all, still a spirit so the body is only temporary.
Whether I believe this or not is neither here nor there, I know
for a fact that many of the Ottawa's that I have met surely do.
Please keep in mind that the above isn't something from the "official" folk-lore
of that Tribes particular Band. It was one "brother" trying to explain to
another "brother" why a certain something happened at a party one night.
