After reading a lot about the M&P 15-22, I decided to purchase one. The two things I'm looking for (from those with 15-22 experience) is some insight about: 1) a scope worthy of this 22 lr gem (I don't need to spend a lot for a "plinker" but I want something that will work in typical lighting conditions) and 2) a trigger modification--mine seems a little stiff for my liking.

Any input is appreciated???

Congrats on your new rifle and welcome to the 15-22 family!

Sights: A tough one to narrow down to any one or two choices. There are lots of good optics out there and there's some junk. You really do, for the most part, get what you pay for. If you're looking of a 1x red dot type of sight, there are "tube" RD's and reflex sights in the $50-$100 range that are very good. There's a couple of threads here about these, so I won't rehash it all... just poke around, you'll find plenty of good input.

Triggers: There's the "15 minute" trigger job, where you cut/bend your existing springs, or my preference is the JP-3.5 "yellow" trigger spring kit. For $10 plus shipping, you get replacement springs for the trigger, hammer and disconnector. It takes only a 1/8" drift/punch to remove the fire control group and pop the new springs in and while it's apart a little gentle polishing on the sear surfaces can make a nice difference. I went from creepy & gritty to crisp and smooth. Again, there's a couple of related threads in these forums.

Browse around a bit and you'll find all kinds of great info.. beware of the pictures thread though... it will cause you to spend more money :)

Cheers!

If you are looking for a long range scope, I have to recommend the one I just upgraded to. That is a Ncstar 6-24X50 sporting scope with a AO end piece and a sun shade. This thing is a great scope for the cash. Its worth looking into as you are making your choice.

Thanks

I bought my locally at a new gun store that had its grand opening here in Louisville, Ky. While this scope ranges from 70ish dollars up to 159, depending on where you get it from. I was lucky enough to buy it during the grand opening sale for 40 bucks out the door! But WOW so far its great, I also got ABUQ model/product number Quick release universal bipod (also by NcStar) for 15 bucks!( retails for around 35 give or take) Each item was new and in the box!

Thanks for the input (especially to "Whoppo" for his tip about yellow spring upgrade) it narrows down the "sea" of choices.

Trigger...

My choice for triggers would be the Rock River 2 stage drop in trigger available for $120 at Brownell's. Mine took about 10 minutes to replace and made a WORLD of difference.

This is a good place to get scope. I have ordered 2 off that site,. good price. fast shipping.
Compact Scopes by BARSKA

I used the 10 dollar spring kit from JB works very well. I am ordering one for my wifes 15-22 here in the next few days.

The "15 minute AR15 trigger job" is free and simple to perform, just some spring bends and clipping one leg off the hammer. There's polishing shown if you want.

I did this while waiting for my JP "Yellow Spring" set and it works well. Noticeable drop in trigger weight. Grit will depend on your polishing.

I installed the JP springs when they came and there is little or no difference. But since the yellow springs are in there I left 'em and have the reduced spring set in my spare parts.

For fun I ran my ArmaLite two stage trigger in the rifle. Wonderful as usual. This same trigger by Rock River is roughly $120 and was on my list of "mods" until I did the spring change. No longer on the list as this is a training/plinking rifle. And the trigger seems to age well.

Make a slave pin for the trigger disconnector assembly. Makes swapping these parts very simple and is also handy for super detailed cleaning of the lower receiver every 10,000 rounds or so. Constant removal of the trigger group will cause excessive wear on the lower receiver and is rarely necessary anyway. No drill sergeant is checking your weapon for filth.

Nothing more than an extra trigger/hammer pin (they're the same part number) cut to length. One pin should get two. One for you and one for your shooting buddy.

My trigger has softened a little after the 2,000 rounds or so. It is still a little tight. I may go with the yellow spring kit.

I have this scope on mine right now with a Burris P.E.P.R mount.

BSA 3-9x40 Sweet 22 Riflescope

It works pretty well. The indoor range is not really bright and I can see through it with medium dark safety glasses on with out a problem.

Here is the mount.

Burris AR-P.E.P.R. 1" Scope Mount

I have this red dot on a 45 degree angled mount. I will be replacing the mount with a 1:00 mount soon. It does work well for the distances I shoot it.

BSA Red Dot 20mm Scope

I have this one on another .22 rifle

BSA Red Dot 30mm Scope

I have had good dealings with SWFA. They have shipped fast and I always got what I ordered.

Another good place to look for optics is Primary Arms. They are good to deal with too.

RED DOT STORE - Primary Arms - For Optics Accessories & More | Weapons Optics | Firearm Supplies

I will be getting the gen 3 red dot.

I went with the Swift 1.5-4.5 and have been very happy. They normally sell for $125-$150, mine was a refurb and $75. Fully coated, bright optics, nice reticle. Made in Korea, but at least the profit comes back to the US (American company)
