Scoping things out

ACOG look. 2X fixed magnification.

Bushnell - 2x MP

I used the 1X version of this on my 15-Sport.

Yeah thanks, I've seen those. Gander Mountain, I think. Not variable power though. I think I'm leaning toward the Weaver I posted about above (although the 2.5-10 Vortex is still calling in the background). I just wish I could actually find a place that has either of them in stock so I could get a feel for them. I hate buying things sight unseen. It never seems to end well. At least with Russian brides it doesn't, I'm told.

That weaver weighs in at 27.5oz w/out a mount. The vortex, 16.5oz. The weight alone would keep me from buying the weaver.

I'd try and find something a little lighter. I consider my ar a lightweight rifle. A 30oz scope defeats the purpose. Other than the weight, looks like a good scope.

Yup, she's a bit heavy. I'd have to guess some of the weight is the ridiculously long sunshade. This scope would be used for range bench time. I'll be using irons for close stuff and plinking.

I'm a little confused on what you're looking for. You mentioned you like ACOGs, which are fixed power by the way, and then you mention you want a 1-4 or 3-9. All of the links you posted are variable power scopes. Also some of the prices in the links you posted are close to ACOG territory...

You're confused, how do you think I feel? I pretty much don't like acogs anymore. Well, maybe that's too strong of a statement. I have moved away from acogs. The transition in my "wants" to a variable power came early in the thread. The price issue is all over the map because, well frankly the prices are all over the map. I think I've come down to this.

I want variable power 3-9, 3-12, 4-16, whatever. More of a zoom than my original thoughts because now I'm thinking I'll just use my irons for jumping out of bushes and stuff. I also want side focus and I want illumination. I can take or leave front focal plane but it would be nice I suppose if it came with the package. I want a quick release mount, you know, for the bushes, and it would be nice if the scope had a halfway decent warranty. I'd like to keep it all under a hundred bucks. Am I asking too much?

NA--he's just feeling things out. Optic world is gigantic. Its very easy to end up on a different path than you started. MM--Amazon has a vortex viper 3-9x40 for $280. You can get it with a BDC reticle if you want. Very clear glass, lifetime warranty, under 300 and only 14.2ozs. I recommend a LaRue or Bobro qd mount if your planning on taking the scope off and shooting irons.

Thanks, I looked at that. No side focus, no illumination. My eyes are bad. I want to be sure I don't hit the range officer.

No,i don't work for vortex. I just prefer them and Leupold for the under $500 range. I don't know of to many scopes w/side focus that aren't giant, high powered, long range scopes. Vortex makes the crossfire ii 3-9x50 w/v-brite reticle(illuminated) 18.6ozs, for $210(Amazon).they make a 3-9x40 as well. There's always the viper pst.

Well I think I may have found a scope that will, at least temporarily, satisfy my glass jones. It has all the features I want right now, and has a halfway decent reputation around the net and forums. Of course there are detractors and some may be valid points, but for the money (?), I don't see how I lose.

Primary Arms 4-16X44 Illuminated Mil Dot Scope PA416X - Primary Arms

I'll slap it on with a quick detach mount, plink at the range, and take my time finding that ultimate "you'll never find a better scope than this" scope, whenever that happens to be. then I'll slide this over to my M&P15 22 when I pick one of those up.

So, for the moment, if I wake up tomorrow and feel the same as I do now, I'll order the PA 4-16x44 and move on to my next mission.

Ordered my PA 4-16 scope last night. Primary Arms ships pretty quick so it should be here by mid week. Found a Burris PEPR mount on another board yesterday. It's not a QD but the price was tough to beat. Life is good.
