Scored a hard to find Dan Wesson today

I was close to this LGS today that has been known to occasionally get some real gems in from time to time. I stopped in, and spied this in the case and couldn't believe it. I have NEVER seen one of these in the wild. Dan Wesson .41 magnum---the one caliber missing in my collection and I finally had one in my hand for $999. I was NOT going to let the owner put this back in the case and walk out without it.

Was in a pawn shop in Oklahoma last week. Had a DW 357 in the case. Had $1075 on it. Wasn’t interested. Said he had a complete pistol pac in 41 mag stainless in the back. I asked the price……….$4500.

Very nice. I haven't seen any 41 Magnum ammo on any shelf around here in 2 or 3 years. Hope you have better luck finding some.

Navy buddy of mine bought one of those Dan Wesson pistol packs in 44 mag gosh that was probably like 1987. I'm gonna have to ask him if he still has it ?

Have plenty of DW 1911s, but no revolvers. Always intrigued with the Pistol Pack in 357, but wondered what I’d do with the extra barrels, particularly the 6 and 8 inch.

I don’t reload 41 Magnum. Heck I’ve never shot 41 Magnum but that beauty would’ve followed me home too!

I have a 744V with both 6” and 8” barrels, from GunBroker IIRC. I stumbled onto my 715 with 8” barrel in a large Maine gun store some years ago. Clean as a whistle with original box, tool, and feeler gauge. Salesman couldn’t understand why I was so excited…

To say that Dan Wesson revolvers are built like a tank and lock up like a bank vault would be understatement. The double action trigger pull on mine isn’t great; however, the single action triggers are great.

Excellent find and great looking DW, congratulations. They are accurate shooters with a superb single action trigger.

I have a blue 41 with 4 inch and 8 inch vented barrels and also a 741 Vented Heavy Pistol Pac with 8 inch and 6 inch barrels.

I would probably let the Pistol Pac go for $4250.

Beautiful revolver. Did you get the tool to take the nut off the end of the barrel to remove the barrel should you need to do so? If you didn't, I had a stainless .44 Dan Wesson several years ago without the tool and I made a tool from a pair of needle nose pliers that worked well.

No Sir, it did not come with the tool, but that's ok. You have provided me with an idea about how to fashion one, since I have an old set of needle nosed pliers that I haven't used in years.

I know little about Dan Wesson revolvers and have only owned one, but was always pretty sure these were high quality guns. Something I found interesting and puzzling about them fifteen or so years ago...

I was looking for a DW .22 revolver and eventually bought one through a large online source. Some guns were being sold by the DW company. I assumed these were returned guns that had something wrong with them that the company repaired.

As I recall, prices for these and other DW guns were all over the place. I don't remember ever seeing such a wide discrepancy in prices with any other firearm of any kind. Some were priced so cheap that you'd figure there was a serious problem with them. Others were priced much higher.

The 6" .22 revolver I ended up buying was a great revolver and shot well even if it was very heavy for a .22. I eventually sold it for that reason. I don't keep up with prices on anything nowadays, but perhaps the DW pricing situation has stabilized since I bought my revolver.

The Dan Wesson 41/741 are great revolvers.

We had this one to the range a few weeks back, this is my shooter

I have a Model 41 that has such a nice blue and some factory grips that look like burl walnut I keep pulling it out and looking at it and then take the 741 to the range instead

I still need a Dan Wesson 7414. I have about 1200 pieces of virgin brass waiting for me to find a good deal on a revolver

My Dan Wesson was made by High Standard! And has High Standard roll marks.
The Backstory: When Wesson was just starting out he made a deal with HS for them to make his guns. He got his product without having to invest in all the tooling, people, etc. The price: his name wasn't ON the gun. The High Standard .357 Sentinel Mark II and III were what they were called. His design (well, not exactly his, he got it from someone else) and his specs, High Standard produced.

I was "shopping" at my LGS and saw this 357 in the case with a nominally low price (about $425), took a pic, went home and did a bit of research, and rushed right back and bought it. I think they didn't understand what they had (figuring it was "just" a High Standard) and priced it accordingly.

It's a quality gun, great trigger in both DA and SA, and it gets shot occasionally (I also have a 66-2 stainless and a 28-2 and if I'm shooting in magnum, it's usually the 28 that gets used even though the 66 has a slightly better DA trigger.)

I look every once in a while for another, but I don't think I'll find a "deal" like this one. For my budget, the Wessons are a bit spendy.

Don’t risk scratching up that nice gun by using the wrong tool on it. You can get that tool from EWK Arms. They make the correct tool to disassemble that barrel from the frame. I think they only cost about $30 or $40.

Thank you Sub, I was trying to think of the name for EWK to give to the OP. That is a great looking .41 and can't have been shot much if at all. I have had a few DW's over the years and still have this one in .32, I had the cylinder bored out to accept .327 ammo. It is a great shooting gun.

I remember walking into Walmart circa 1978, in Kosciusko Mississippi looking to pick up a Ruger Security Six and finding a Dan Wesson 715 4 inch just laying there like it was one of the boys. Since it was CHEAPER than the Security Six at $145 and my older brother was standing there telling how he had just read about them, I went for it, only to later trade it for something else because at that time, DW revolvers were viewed like the proverbial "Red-headed stepchild" of S&W. My how times do change!

My next encounter was when the .44 mag came out and I just had to have one, but even then it was a fraction of the price of a Mod. 29 because most people didn't see it as anything great. I forget the price but it wasn't high, maybe $400. I used that gun to compete in Hunter class silhouette with handloads and did very well. Being a genius, I ended up trading it to a friend for his commercial Colt 1911 which at the time I felt I was trading UP because I been bitten by the rising semiauto bug in the early '80s.

Clearly I wasn't getting paid to predict the future!
