From $20-$80
Please recommend a quality set for general use. Sight adjustment. Scope mounting, etc. I read reviews on various sets. The reviews varied from Great sets to Don't buy.
What do you have? Thanks, Frank

+1 on the Brownell sets. If you break or need to grind a tip, you can easily get a replacement.

+1 on the Brownells set - I've been using the same set since 1970. Fits about 99% of all gun screws. Top quality.

Wheeler Engineering...

Wheeleer Engineering set from Midway. It even has the S&W rebound slide tool which fits into the screwdriver handles.

What about the small Wheeler set, for range bag use?

The reviews on the Wheeler kit varies. Some swear by it and some swear at it.
So, would the 89 piece Wheeler kit that can be bought for about $79 shipped be the way to go. Or would several various size Brownell's kits be the thing.

S&W also has a kit.

I need a travel kit for the range bag. And a larger kit for the kitchen table.

I have the small Wheeler set for my range bag. Decent quality at best. I would be much happier if the handle was shorter. The magnet on mine is also very strong and it is a stone b**ch to get the smaller bits back out.

My bench set is from Chapman and I like it very much. A short handle that I use 90% of the time with an extension and a ratchet driver to use for extra torque when required. Replacement bits are very inexpensive so there is never an excuse not to carve one to the exact size you need when such is not already in the set.

The Brownells sets are definitely first cabin. If money were no object, that's the way to go. But they are over your limit for a 10 piece starter set.

I have two sets,,,and have had them for 35 years at least, one is Bonanza Sports, and the other is Hawk International, Have no clue if either is still in business but they both have served me well

I've had a set of Bonanza screwdrivers since the early 70's as well. They were the first really good set I owned. They are just as good today as they were 35 years ago. I found out a year or so ago that they were still being manufactured under the Forster brand.

I've got a set of Forster screwdrivers that are well made. Bought them direct. They were 66$ for a starter set of 10. Hollow ground and good stout handles.

Brownells also sells a S&W kit, comprised of a screwdriver with bits specifically ground to fit S&W screws --- sideplate,, yoke, cylinder latch, and sights. This is all you need for your range bag, if you're only dealing with S&W revolvers. For some reason, I've added a fourth bit, which I guess fits some aftermarket grip screw or etc.

I have a large Wheeler set and some additional bits. It's not the best but it gets me by. I also have the Wheeler torque wrench. I was amazed when I realized how little 25-30 inch pounds was on scope bases and 15-20 inch pounds on rings. I used to just tighten them till I started to worry. At first I didn't trust these settings, but I haven't had a scope move and I install scopes with much more confidence now.

FYI... I just learned. Google Brownells Coupons and all kind of discounts are available.
I ordered today:
12 in 1 Precision Mini screw driver set (Brownell 079-000-001)
1911 screw driver set (Brownell 080-000-444)
Chapman Deluxe screw driver set (172-890-000)

I've had my Bonanzas for about the same amount of time. The rigid feel of a one piece driver is priceless.
