Screwed out of a truck deal in AZ.

I think the guy did you a favor.

Sounds like the kind of guy who, when a kid, would say something like, "My mother doesn't want me to do that." Whenever he just didn't want to do something, he would pull out the "Mother Card" or later on, "Wife Card."

It's so much easier that way. And, it puts the onus on someone else, instead of him.

Who could tell what was really wrong with the truck? Could you believe him now?

Before I retired, I used to conduct business worth thousands and tens of thousands of dollars, using a verbal promise as the legal tender. I never got burned and never burned anyone else.

THE RULES HAVE CHANGED!

A man's word as his bond is pretty dead.

Now if it is the deal I want I strike at that moment.

Had some weasel out and not keep promises. Cars, guns, 1st wife.....

I bought a commercial Mauser with a broken stock, bought a nice graded piece of wood finished it and it turned out super sharp.

I took it with me to a gun show. A younger guy asked if it was for sale and if so could he see it. He really liked it. I do not remember the exact price, perhaps $500. I explained the finish, glass bedding and he wanted it. Said he would take it, old school me immediately stuck my hand out and we shook. He counted his money and then got cold feet. Said he changed his mind, I said fine, but you do know a man's word is his bond and a hand shake seals it. I guess you're too young or your elders didn't tell you about it. Spun on my heel and left.

A few isles over he tapped on my shoulder and said I will take it. I told him he doesn't have to buy it from my guilt trip, if he wants to shop the show go do it. The gun will sell. He said, no I feel if I look around you'll sell it and I'll always regret it. Ok, shook again and he gave me the money. This was a 1st. Usually the cold feet crowd runs a ways really fast.

I bought a buggered and broken Marlin 444 once. Some how they got a round stuck between the magazine tube and the follower.

Just in case any one has wondered if the indestructible Marlin can be broken, the answer is yes, give a bubba a large enough screw driver they can break and mess up the innards. Not to mention the idiot marks.

He wanted the same price as a new one, it was several years old, I said nope. Parts and repair costs money. They ruined the loading ate and it was twisted 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the receiver. They were deer hunting and did a field fix. No one would buy it. He called one day and asked what I would give. I told him I priced parts and repairs (repair would be me) should knock it down to 60%, he hemmed and hawed and finally I gave him used cost minus parts and repairs.

I fixed it up, worked down the idiot marks and cold blued the spots.polished the scratches off the bolt and inside the receiver. IT loaded like a new one, shot great too, made a nice companion piece to my 1895 in 45-70.

The guy started coming into the gun shop where I hung out, telling the owner and anyone who would listen I screwed him. All the regulars thee and I were friends, I fixed guns for the owner and watched the shop when he was out of town. The guy was told he got a fair price for a broken gun that no one would buy.

The owner said I'm tired of his ****, hurts when new customers come in. He said I don't care what you do but why don't you sell it back to him to shut him up.

The guy was doing his BS show and I said, tell you what, you want the gun I'll just sell it back to you. He said you gave me $XX for it, I have that amount with me. I said wrong, the parts are, and the repair is, looks like you owe me $200 over the broken gun price.

He hemmed and hawed finally he said something like I'll give you your blood money. My friends were now laughing at him. The owner had called me, I had the gun in the trunk. He gave me the money then I gave him the gun. The LGS owner then said, you've got your gun, get out and stay out.

The guy was a well to do businessman, didn't buy guns there, could have bought new one. Just had to prove some point that only Rod Sterling would understand.

Selling/buying cars is a nightmare. Last guy I dealt with wanted my truck and gave me a $100 deposit, said he'd buy it next day. Receive a text saying he can't get the money and is it possible to get his deposit back. I gave him it back as I didn't need the headache over a $100 buck.

Never overestimate the human mindset and you'll neve be disappointed.
Me-if someone reneges on a deal, I just figure that it t'warn't meant to be. I get screwed so much in the business world and it doesn't pay to get worked up over a couple hundred dollars one way or the other. It isn't worth the time and effort to sue over even up to a couple thousand dollars given the cost of prosecution and THE COST OF COLLECTING if you get a judgment. I am a firm believer in what comes around goes around. People by and lawge are scumbags ans will screw you as soon as look at you. The ones who do it the most are the ones you try to do a favor for, or the rich ones who can afford not to (probably the reason they became rich in the first place ).
Anyway life is way more pleasant if you just worry about you and not use up so much energy ranting about the alpha hotels.
