No sooner had I responded "Dunno" yet again to the 532nd email/text/FBmessage asking when SCSW5 would be available than a box load of them showed up on my front porch, proving that they actually do exist and that the slow boat from China has finally arrived. Presumably copies are now available from various sources (or soon will be).

Amazon is showing a Jan. 7 availability date, but they've been all over the calendar, and I doubt if they know (or care) when it will actually be available. You can probably get it as quickly from them as from anywhere else.

You can also order directly from the publisher, Gun Digest, who shows the book as currently in stock: Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 5th Edition – GunDigest Store

Rick & I are always delighted to sign copies - you can catch us at the SWCA Annual Symposium, Wanenmacher's Tulsa Arms Show, every April & November, and the MVACA Kansas City National Show every July. I usually have copies for sale at my table at those shows, but charge full retail ($75) whereas you can get them cheaper at Amazon. If you want to spring for shipping both ways, you can send a copy to us each for signature, but that gets a little complicated.

Gun Digest did a great job of final edit and layout - it took a lot of work. My only criticisms - the paper is a little lighter weight than the 4th Ed. making the photos a bit lower res, AND we added so much new stuff that they ran out of space and had to delete five appendices.

The removed appendices are:
  • S&W Historic Milestones and Timelines
  • Chronology of Changes
  • Listing by Caliber and Year of Introduction
  • Identification Characteristics
  • Current S&W Product List
  • S&W Law Enforcement and Security Firearms
  • Illustrated Glossary - (update in progress, please check back)

I've published the removed appendices on my website for reference purposes - S&W info | Supica Gun Heritage

I was disappointed that these were removed, and would have removed other content instead to make room for them if given the opportunity, but there was a huge rush to get the book finally printed and on the market. I'd be interested in members' thoughts on how useful and important those appendices are for future consideration.

Let us know what you think of the 5th Ed, and many thanks to all the forum and SWCA members who contributed to this and past editions! This really is a collaborative effort.

Are the “removed appendices” in the 4th edition? I have the 3rd and have been patiently waiting on this one.

Thanks Jim, really looking forward to receiving my copy.....I purchased/paid for mine on Amazon back in May......The ship date has been changed twice and now just shows it might be available January 2025 as you mentioned.

Keeping fingers crossed, but glad to hear that you received a box of hard copies.....that is a good sign!!

Most were available in both the 3rd and 4th Edition. Two new ones were supposed to added to the 5th Ed - a list of law enforcement S&W's and a list of current S&W products.

All are available on gunheritage.com

Standard Catalogue of S&W- 5th Ed

Mine was delivered on Tuesday. Wow is all I can say. Too bad those sections were left out. Anyway still a great tool and so informative. Thanks Jim and Richard and all the contributers.

Jim, I came by your table a couple of times at the Tulsa show but missed you each time. Hope all is well. Congrats on the new book. See you in the Spring.

I've been looking forward to the 5th Ed., Amazon is saying a Jan 9th delivery and mine is on order.

It’s Here!

Barns & Noble called late yesterday to let me know that my copy of the 5th edition had arrived and was ready for pickup. Got there just after they opened with a handful of B&N gift cards and left with my new book. Excuse me, but I’ve got some reading to do.

Jim, got mine from Amazon. Only took about a week. Great job! Gonna take awhile to get used to new format and acquisition of some readers.:)
