I'm S&W freak , i have bsically all the revolvers i want (yea right). I have 1911's , and now i'm into S&W autos. I bought my wife a NIB "908" a couple of months ago and love it !!!. Now i'm thinking about the SD40. Whats everybodys take on this model , thanks , Paul.

I recently bought an SD9 and I honestly couldn't be happier. Fits me better than the XD or M&P. If I have an issue is that the guide rod is plastic but hey if it works...

SD40 first time out
I got my SD 40 on the 19th and went to the range last Wednesday. The gun felt great in my hand and on the 7 yard range the results are not too bad for a new gun. The trigger takes some getting used to, especially if you are not familiar with striker fired guns. After about 70 rounds, it seemed to me that the trigger was smoothing out. After about 110 rounds, it felt even better. Could be that I was just adapting to the pull.
The fit is OK but I think the way the slide sits on the frame could be more centered. Don't know why Smith lets these guns come out that way. The finish is very good and machining on the slide (inside and out) looks smooth with little, if any, machine marking. The magazines are a bear to load unless you have the great UpLULA loader. Any regular shooter of hi-cap guns should definitely have this loader!
No FTFs, FTE or other issues using Ranger 135 grain HP, Fiocchi Extrema 155 grain HP, Federal 180 grain FMJ and the good ole WWB 165 grain FMJ. The SD40 is now my primary carry gun much to the chagrin of my Taurus 709 Slim!

I own a SD40 (along with a Glock 19 and 23). I really like it and I posted a thread "Smith & Wesson SD40 Rocks" you could take a look at, but all in all, it feels really good in the hand, I'm getting three inch groups offhand at 25 yards with the Winchester 165 grain "white box" ammo, it never fails to feed, fire or function, and I think it looks really good, kind of like a M&P slide over a Sigma receiver, only (I think) better. I like the four inch barrel and am now looking at getting a M&P compact with the four inch barrel. If somebody would come out with a conversion barrel in .357 Sig, or from .40 to 9mm, that would make it even better. (Stormlake, KKM are you there?)

I would definitely like to see a conversion like 9mm to 40 or vice versa. Don't see why it can't be done. Like the Sig 250 barrel slide and magazine, the frame is the same on both so.....
Try measuring the widths of the 9mm and .40 Sigma/SD magazines (interchange between Sigma and SD) and you will see why 9mm and .40 on the same Sigma/SD frame are a problem.
Unlike the M&P, the magazines and well widths on the 9mm vs .40 in the Sigma/SD and NOT the same. You are stuck with the original magazines, no matter what. There used to be conversion barrels to shoot 9mm on a .40 Sigma using .40 magazines, but they have been dropped due to hit-and-miss functioning.

Then the difference must be in the opening for the mag well, both are listed at 1.29" wide.
I have the Sigma mags in hand and am measuring them with a micrometer. The 9mm is more narrow, as is the mag well opening compared to the .40. Don't believe it, measure them yourself.
I know from my experience that a .40 to 9mm KKM barrel conversion will work with the .40 Smith and Wesson Magazine - useing a Glock 23 (.40 S&W). I had the barrel one range day and forgot the different magazines, so I tried the .40 mags with 9mm ammo and, lo and behold, they worked. No malfunctions whatsoever. I don't know if it would work on the SD, but first somebody would have to make the barrel......
