SD9 take down lever spring

I bought an extended take down lever from Galloway Precision, and installed it today. (I also bought the stainless recoil assembly...which is very nice.) It the process of doing so, I found out that the spring is not retained (as it is on a Glock) and will fly out of the frame if you don't keep it depressed while you are sliding the new lever in place. On a Glock, since it is retained, the spring will remain in place....the spring on the SD9VE won't, unless of course you keep it compressed until the new lever is in.

They also will fly a surprising distance away.

lol how long did it take you to relocate the spring? i once had a spring from my sigma slide take off on me and took me 2 hours of me on my hands and knees searching what seemed every carpet fiber. Thanks for the heads up btw.

Yes, it is an extremely easy install...as long as you don't let the spring get away from you. Even putting that back in is very easy, IF you have a picture (or can figure out) how the spring is oriented. (I couldn't find a picture anywhere, on the internet, and I've sold all my Glocks.) Of course, as soon as I got it down, a member here posted a picture with a question he had about something else in the frame, and it showed the spring perfectly!

As for the install, you just depress the spring, the stock lever slides out (if you tilt the frame, it will fall out) and then you slide in the new lever. Just be sure to keep the spring depressed while doing this...and it helps to have a third hand or an assistant.

It took me a couple of hours, inventing some new curse words, and deciding to quit and call S&W to buy a new spring AND see if they had any pictures....of course, THEN was when I saw the spring (before I called S&W, fortunately.) Some manuals have the exploded parts diagram of the gun...the manual for the SD9VE doesn't.

One time I was cleaning a Glock magazine at the kitchen table, and when I tried to reassemble it, the spring flew away and disappeared. I never found it, and ordered a new spring. The next Christmas, my wife found it in a box of her Christmas wrapping stuff...she had been wrapping gifts in the living room, which is next to the kitchen...apparently it flew into the living room and landed in the box!

My takedown spring flew too.

I heard it hit the ceiling then nothing.

Searched everywhere and couldnt understand why I didnt hear it
hit the floor or something else.

This was in the morn. in my basement and found it that night around 6 p.m.

I was on my couch upstairs petting my sheperd dog and the damn thing was stuck in her hair on her back.

She was laying next to me when I was taking it apart.

Man the places that thing went that day on her back.

I was cleaning a Glock once and had another spring get loose on me too, i think it was the extractor spring. After looking for about 2 hours i was so angry i left the house and stepped out to get some fresh air. Came back in and looked some more and never did find it. That night as i was getting me a spoon to eat, our kitchen drawer was left cracked open about a half of an inch and guess what...yep the spring was in with the spoons...i think once a spring takes off it gets magical powers to to hide and teleport......
