My local shop has 2 of them, but they are used. Looked kind of like an M&P. Felt very nice.

Love my .40 but the wife has a hard time racking the slide. So I decided to get her a 9mm. I absolutely love the SD40 and feel it is the perfect blend of the Sigma and the M&P. Trigger is smooth and breaks cleanly. Lighter than a M&P. Where are you located? Try to find a shop nearby that has them and go handle it. It really is everything I hoped for at a price competitive with the SR9. Only complaint is S&W isn't offering a rebate, yet! I could really use a couple of free mags.

I am impatiently waiting to get one as well. I do not want to buy off an auction site so I am going to hold out until OMB Express gets them in. The website still lists them as back-ordered.

I am already tired of listening on some of the other gun forums how AWFUL the trigger is and that the SD9 is basically the same gun as the Sigma with a better rail. Bet most of them have never even touched an SD9. Al Gore needs to appoint me moderator of the entire internet. Then I can give these people time outs or kick 'em off for good.

They obviously have not touched an SD. The trigger (while long and still on the heavy side) is no where near that of Sigma. My SD40 after about 200 rounds is breaking in nicely near 6.5 lbs. My new SD9 is closer to the stated 8lbs but noticeably lighter than my sigma. It also has a cleaner break and shorter reset. The trigger reminds me of a fresh out of the box glock with a slightly longer pull. Hate to say it but so many people have been Glocked to death to the point where they think anything less is garbage. I for one love all my Smiths and would not own a Glock due to the terrible grip angle. The good news is there is a revoultion happening and people are starting to see that there are equally good guns from other manufacturers.

Hi Y'all: I have only seen photos of the SD series. Was wondering if they were a lower priced M&P or an improved Sigma. Also, has anyone heard if they will eventually issue the SD in a .45 acp?

No word of a 45. Really to say it is either one of the options listed is doing an injustice to the SD. It really is the best of both.

Thanks for the reply Backon4, guess I will have to hunt for an M&P if I decide to get a .45 acp. The photos of the SD series looked like it had cleaner lines and more basic, functional platform. I think the interchangable back strap inserts of the M&P series are useful though. Regards,

I for one love all my Smiths and would not own a Glock due to the terrible grip angle.

X2 on that, I hate a Glock. I wouldn't have one if someone gave one to me, I can't stand the way they feel in my hand, the grip angle is stupid.

I don't hate Glocks, but they just don't fit in my hand comfortably. The M&P pistols fit me very well, and so did the Sigma (I no longer have it, though.) I bought a SD9 yesterday, and it feels just like the Sigma, in terms of grip, which I like. The trigger (on dry fire only, haven't been to the range yet) is a lot better than the trigger on my Sigma. One thing I noticed that was different than all the other S&W pistols I have bought: it was dripping oil! It was oozing out of the slide and the magazine...I intend to clean it before I fire it anyway, but I thought that was a little unusual.

I can't find 16 round magazines for the SD9 on the S&W website, unless I am just overlooking them. The SD9 magazines sure do look like the Sigma magazines, although S&W has previously said they are not interchangeable. I sent S&W an e-mail asking about magazine availability, and I'll report back with their answer.

The sigma magazines do work. The difference is the base plate and the follower. I have used my sigma .40 magazines in my SD40 with 0 issues.

Dang it...I had a bunch of Sigma magazines that I sold when I sold my Sigma. I assume you didn't change the follower?

I wonder why S&W told me they wouldn't work...I guess they want you to buy more magazines.

I'm awfully tempted by the SD9. They can be purchased from one major internet seller for $385, delivered. I had a Sigma and we had an amicable parting -- I liked the feel of the gun, the construction was solid, and reliability (the key factor) was top notch -- but the trigger was such that I could not master it and hit the target with the accuracy (repeatability?) I have come to expect with my Sigs and even my M&Ps (which I push a little to the left and down, like a lot of people). But the SD is tempting... and the price is right (half the price of a new Sig P-series, for example, and probably $150 under Glock).

Bottom line -- don't beat it up with the Sigma's old reputation -- consider it a full step improvement over the much improved Sigma -- but do what I intend to do, which is make sure I am okay with the trigger before I buy one!

The trigger was my concern...I had intended that the Sigma was going to be a nightstand gun for my wife, but she hated the trigger. That was the first thing I tried on the SD9, and it feels much better. I can't estimate the lbs of pull, but I can say it is better than the Sigma, better than my SIG P220 (in DA), but not as good as my M&Ps (45 & 9.)

So, my preliminary plan is for the SD9 to reside in her nightstand. The real test will be at the range, and how she likes it.
