Hello I am new to this Hobby and I am hooked. I recently woke up and purchased some home protection in the form of a Mossberg 12 gauge 18.5" barrel pump action shotgun and the S&W SD9VE with all the fixings.

My question is: What does 16+1 mean??

I know it pertains to the magazine count. However I can (with some oomph )get 16 in the mag but it will not load in the weapon. Does it mean 15 +1 in the chamber = 16. ????

The magazine on my SD9VE has count windows. The last number is 16. So mag can load 16, but it's very difficult. I just load up 15 and call it good. I load by hand and no magazine loader, so if one has a Lupa loader, it might get that last round in for a full mag and compression of spring.

So for this, it's 16+1. You have to have one in chamber first then palm slap the full mag in hard for the load up.

Like TriumphMan said, your magazine should hold 16. The last one is a B*tch without a loader. It will get easier to load the 16th the more the magazine is used.

It means the mag can hold 16 and one chambered for a total of 17. Sometimes new mags are hard to fully load. Not all brands or all calibers but it's not uncommon.

but it will not load in the weapon

Sure it will, just load with the slide open! Goes right in and locks. By the way, this is the standard manual of arms for loading a semiauto.

This business of loading one in the chamber, removing the mag to add a Barney bullet and loading a full mag against a closed slide is a modern mania.

Now does that give you an idea why you are having trouble loading with the slide closed? You have to compress the spring another 1/2 cartridge against the bottom of the slide, which is doubly tough with the magazine full. DON"T beat on the bottom of the magazine; put the heel of your hand on the bottom of the magazine and push hard until the magazine fully locks in.

I hadda use a loader at first because getting all sixteen in by hand was an impossible act at first,it helps (for some reason) to take the mags apart, put them back together and then load to sixteen and let them sit for a few weeks to a month.

However by hand I still need to put all of my 185+ pounds on it to get the last couple shells in  so I still prefer a loading device.

I load a full mag plus one up the chamber for seventeen rounds for carry, just give it a good slap the first few times, once the spring loosens up it's easy to push it until it clicks in.

Been a lot of postings about how hard it is to get the specified 16 rounds into the SD9VE. Why is it important?

I also just settle for 15 and call it good. Also, I never put a round in the chamber unless at the range or otherwise planning to shoot.

As far as self defense is concerned, if one round more or less is the deciding factor, you are in serious trouble anyhow.

I do have a well-functioning and economical holster and it came with a nice place for a second magazine. It would be useful when plinking outside where you don't have a place to easily reload a magazine.

Actually I have 4 magazines but never bother with more than two except when I want to test fire specific brands and loads.

This fixed my magazine loading problem. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPv8EWalv4c[/ame]

The way I was trained to load a +1 configuration is, load the magazine (to 10, since that's all we get in California), rack the slide to chamber the 10th round. Then, release the magazine, load an additional cartridge into the magazine, and re-load the magazine for 10+1. No slapping, hard banging, etc. involved.

Hope this helps any new comers.

I've found with time, my magazines for my SD9VE and SD40VE have all gradually become easier to load full. I load 16 in the mag for the 9 and do not have a hard time getting the mag to lock in, I load 14 in the 40 and same thing. With time they have certainly become easier to load when full into the gun. I also do not chamber a round unless prepared to fire. So, in my holster I've got 16 or 14 in the gun depending on which I'm carrying with nothing in the chamber, just the way I prefer to carry. I've found it is easy for me to unholster and rack one in the chamber quickly while gather my aim.

Welcome to the Brotherhood of the Smith. I would not be concerned with the "only" 15 rounds. You have a shotgun with at least a few more to toss at the bad guy. If that does not stop an intruder - you have greater concerns, sir. Go practice using defensive tactics with both. It will pay off. Just my 2 ...

Sorry, didn't mean to upset you.

You clearly know that the defense trials allow a specific number of magazines on the course so maybe you would need that extra round.

I'm really sorry for those folks with an SD40VE. They are seriously deficient in the number of rounds they hold.

When I first got my SD9ve I couldn't get 16 in the mag either. But a Maglula loader solved that. Makes it a lot easier loading mags for range practice too.

I use the same one. Granted, it's only 10 rounds in my mag (thanks, California), but it still get me down to having a fully loaded mag in under a minute.
