SD9VE Cleaning Recommendations

Hey everyone,

Newbie to the group and I hope everyone is honest.

I purchased my firearm from Academy several years ago (I can't even remember when this was, hurricane Harvey destroyed all my paperwork) I've shot the firearm maybe 4 times in a couple of years, most recently last year for my CHL in texas (before the law was changed)

As you can see from the pictures, I have not kept it in good condition. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

1) what would be a good recommendation to clean the firearm from the outside? Some type of solution, rag, brush?

2) recommendation of what to use to clean the firearm on the inside. I know everyone uses different products and brushes.

3) how many times should I maintain it so it doesn't "rust" like it looks right? Should of keep it in a different case?

4) can I remove the front sight? It's really bad wanted to put something new. Any recommendations?

I can help you with your first question. Get some 0000 steel wood and some light gun oil such as Break Free CLP. Even 3-in-1 oil will work. Apply the oil to the slide and gently scrub it with the steel wool. Keep it wet with oil. Should take most of the rust off.

I would find something else to store it in. That foam might be holding the humidity and causing the rust. Just leave it out of the case or get a gun sock to store it in.

Keep a light coat of oil on it and reapply gun oil as often as needed. Check every month or so.

Buy a HOPPE'S gun cleaning kit at Wal-Mart for about $12. Everything you need is in that kit (except for patches). Save your money from buying all of that FOO-FOO juice, and buy ammo with it.

The oil and steel wool process will work. Personally, I'd use Flitz polish (available in a lot of gun stores, drug stores, dollar stores, online, etc.) Apply with a fingertip, buff off with a cloth. Use a Q-tip around the sight. A light wipedown with an oily rag will protect the surface, or you can do like I do and wax the outside. Automobile wax (wax...not polish) will work...I've used Pledge furniture polish (or the generic stuff) with good results. I use Renaissance Wax myself, but if you've only got the one gun, you might not want to look for that.

Don't leave it in the factory case. I keep mine in a gun sock, but an actual old sock will work just fine. Most anything really except that foam lined case or any kind of "pistol rug" or such. Those things are made for transport, not storage really.

The Hoppes kit mentioned above will do just fine. Patches as mentioned above, and I find Q-tips to be handy for small places.

If I store a firearm in a foam type holders I spray a light coat of WD-40 (or similar) on the foam to prevent rust on the firearm.

I remember having a Doscosil Case with that foam that would rust up handguns when stored in it..
I threw it on the hill at the range & shot it to pieces..
The foam absorbs moisture & rusts any metal it comes in contact with..
Come to think of it one of my HK USPs is in a factory case like that in my basements safe.. I will go down tomorrow & oil that pistol & put it in one of those blue bags S&W seems to ship every handgun in now days. Hk started using these cases in 2002 & before that they were grey plastic hard cases
I noticed S&W stopped shipping guns in those foam cases quite a while back & went with a cardboard box
