Greetings All!

Well I am thinking about trading in my Taurus PT111 G2 for an SD9VE. I love shooting the Taurus and it is fairly accurate. But I have had it a month and have been having issues like mags sticking in the mag well and slide releases by itself. About 175 rounds through it so far..

Would love to hear from some SD9VE owners. Thanks!

Welcome from Texas!
The SD9VE was my very first pistol. With around 1000 rounds through it not a single hic-up. The trigger smoothed out, I was able to load the mags to full capacity after some break in time. It's accurate, reliable and inexpensive. When a member on here was looking for beta testers for a mag extension I got lucky and got a mag extension, trigger and spring kit for free (thanks again to Apex Tactical). Those goodies made the already great pistol even better. Even though I also have a SIG P229 that can do 9mm, .40S&W and .357SIG, I won't get rid of my SD9VE and she's always in the range bag when I got the range.
Can't go wrong with a SD9VE or SD40VE, depending on which caliber you prefer.

My wife has an SD9VE. It's a very nice striker-fired, polymer pistol. She's been happy with it. If there is one complaint, it's the trigger. Fortunately, that is easily remedied with an Apex kit.

I'm a 45 ACP & 357 Mag type of guy with an affinity for stainless steel, so polymer nines really aren't my thing, but that's why they make Blue Bell ice cream in a whole lot of different flavors! :D

I think you'll be happy with the SD9VE.

Any of the plastic fantastic will drop the slide if you slam the magazine in hard enough. It is also possible to damage the magazine catch.

I've owned several Taurus pistols and revolvers, including the PT 111 G2, and I've sold or traded them all. I don't care for Taurus' poor QC and their customer service (warranty) is slow...like, government slow...and about as effective. The PT 111 G2 I had also had one mag that stuck in the mag well, brand new out of the box, and while Taurus did replace the mag they should have checked it before they sent it out.

The SD9VE is a great pistol, in its category (budget firearms.) In fact, I'd say it's the best in that category. S&W has a great warranty, and they pay for shipping. My favorite accessories include an extended take down lever, made by Galloway, as well as a stainless steel guide rod assembly, also made by Galloway. You can get a steel rear sight that is made for the M&P pistols. I order magazines from Greg Cote LLC. A Pachmayr grip sleeve makes the pistol very comfortable for me.

I use FMJ ammo for practice. I don't use the cheap stuff like Tula...I've found that Remington and Federal work well for me. I like Hornady Critical Defense 115gr JHP for defense.

Personally, I prefer the trigger to be heavier on a gun with no external safety. If you've ever shot a DA revolver, or a DA pistol (like a SIG) the trigger pull is lighter than those, IMO. A lot of dry firing will smooth it out...of course, so will a lot of live fire, but that costs more and isn't recommended when you are watching TV. A lot of people here suggest the Apex trigger and/or spring kits, but I don't like to mess with the fire control group. It might void the warranty, it might cause problems, and I personally feel that if a gun doesn't have the firing mechanism that you like, get a different gun. That's just my opinion, of course, and that plus a few dollars will get you a small soda somewhere.

What I really like about the SD9VE, besides its reliability, is that you can easily remove the striker to clean out the channel...no roll pins to knock out. There are a number of videos on YouTube that show the process, if you need them.

As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of the SD9VE. Are there "better" pistols? Sure...but you will have to pay more. For $300ish (Academy Sports has them in my area for $320, and sometimes has them on sale for $290) it's very hard to beat this pistol, price-wise. There is a comparable pistol to consider, the Ruger 9E (the budget version of the Ruger SR9, but has some better features than the SR9, IMO) but it sells for about $50 more and only comes with one magazine. It's worth considering for a comparison...Ruger has great service and also pays for shipping. I've owned both, and I prefer the SD9VE, but again, that's my opinion.

I own both a PT111 G2 and a S&W SD9VE & SD40VE .... The G2 is a great pistol ... Seems like Taurus got it right ..... But the SD9VE is the best value out there... And holster selection is great (Glock 19) holsters work perfect ..

I also own both Taurus PT111 G2 ($179.99)and the S&W SW9VE ($299.00). I have had no problems with these two pistols. I carry the PT111 most of the time and have shot 1000 rounds in it and the SW9VE. I kept the SW9VE in the nightstand by the bed for my wife. I have the Apex spring kit and the enhacement trigger installed with ArmaLaser TR15 laser.

My SD9VE is one of my favorite pistols. From the day I took the first shot with it I knew I made a great choice. My last pistol purchase ( Tri Star C100 ..CZ 75 compact clone) has put my SD9 as my second favorite pistol for several reasons ( all metal, SA/DA, and true POA sights), but I will never sell my SD9VE. Have 2K rds thru it and never a firearm related failure. I rotate it as a CCW and costing about $120 less than my C100.... a very good value.

I don't know,my taurus G2 runs like a champ but my new sd9ve just jams jams jams...waiting for my fedex label to return it to S&W.The sights on the taurus g2 are awful, mine came loose after some shooting,I had to order a new front sight and loctite em down.

Greetings from Arizona !!!

Here's MY .02 cents worth on the Smith & Wesson SD9VE:

I got a SMOKIN' DEAL on MY NEW SD9VE 9mm in August of 2015. I think i paid $300.00 (out the door) for the standard setup with the pistol and the 2 magazines (16 round capacity each) included from the factory.

This was my very first pistol (that had NOT been a government issued weapon).......

Personally, I chose the SD9VE for a couple of reasons:
1. It's a "Smith & Wesson" - name brand reliability
2. Magazine capacity - I LOVE the 16 round capacity that the SD9VE has. I lke being able to know that I have a lot of rounds - IF I NEED them......
3. Price - It IS what it IS - Affordable Peace of Mind
4. 9mm - I have since expanded my collection, and have standardized ALL of my handguns to the 9mm round - way good for logistics when the SHTF...

This weapon fires and shoots excellent - it's easy for me to conceal (as I am a Licensed CCW here in AZ).

I would buy another one in a heart beat.... VERY SATISFIED with my decision to go with the SD9VE !!!!

Hope that helps anyone that's still "on the fence" about whether or not they want to purchase an SD9VE or an SD40VE....

Thank You!

Thanks for all the reply's..

I have decided to hold on to the PT111 for a while. Just feels comfortable to me....

sd9ve problems

i have owned my sd9 for about eight months now. i have put a fair amount of rounds through it at this point ( about 600, i use ultra max at the range). but recently when firing i have no issues until i get to the last round in the magazine. instead of loading the last round into the chamber the slide locks back as if the mag was empty. had the range attendant take a look at it an according to him the pistol seemed to be fine. after the issue took place i left the range i went home and broke the pistol all the way down, cleaning it thoroughly. i returned to the range with a couple boxes of different ammo, ( the usual utra max, remmington, and winchester white box) , still had the same issue. i am considering sending it into s&w but would like to avoid that if possible

i havent cleaned the magazines yet, which in hindsight would have been a good next step to take! being that is friday ill do that here shortly and take it down to the range and see if that helps. thankyou

Magazine(s)

I haven't cleaned the magazines yet, which in hindsight would have been a good next step to take! Being that is Friday I'll do that here shortly and take it down to the range and see if that helps. Thank you

More than one magazine?
Exact same time for all magazines?

Very strange . . . could it be something else?

I purchased my SD9 last week. Shot it at the range the first time today. 200 rounds no issues. It's accurate and smooth. The trigger is a little tight but I'm sure that will loosen up over time. Im very happy with this gun.

I like my SW9VE very much. It's a great shooter. I've also been a Taurus fan but that's fading. They change models too quickly and parts and mags become unavailable. If you look at their offerings, the variety they have today is much less than what they had just a few years ago. I wouldn't be surprised to see them out of business or out of the US market soon.

I like them both but I'm looking for a new 9mm and a couple .40s and I'm pretty sure they'll all be S&Ws. My only question is will they be SD series or M&P series.
