Probably about 1500 rounds through the gun. It does get some dry firing but I didn't consider it to be excessive. Broke on the portion that contacts the bar. Is there anyone that stocks replacements or is going through S&W warranty process my only option? I'd actually like to have a spare or two around.

I'm pretty sure you have to get that through S&W. I had a lot of misfires with my SD9VE, called S&W and they sent me a complete striker assembly free of charge

Well S&W sent me a e-mail saying it was a "restricted" part and the whole gun would have to be sent back. I replied asking them by whom was it restricted since Glock strikers are dime a dozen anywhere on the net. If it becomes necessary for me to ship this whole gun back to get a striker it will be my first and last Smith.

A while back I inquired about buying a striker assembly, and I too was told that if my striker needed to be replaced for any reason, they wanted to do it, because they wanted to see what was going on. It may be an inconvenience, since the striker is easy to replace, but S&W will pay for shipping your gun to them and back to you, and the turn-around time is pretty short, so it's really not that big of a deal. Certainly not to boycott S&W guns from now on!

Just give them a call , if you get the right CSR they will send it right out . I was expecting to pay for it but he said no charge and I had it in 2 days if I remember right

I'm not even interested in trying to make S&W pay for the repair. I know they'll do that with no problem. It IS a big deal when your gun is down for such an insignificant part that could easily be sold online . I really don't consider myself a Glock fan by any stretch but at least you can buy simple non-FFL parts for them quickly and easily.

Yes, you can buy most Glock parts online...for example, Lone Wolf has a Glock striker available for $58 (I don't know if that includes shipping.) Personally, I like the fact that S&W will inspect, fix, and return my gun at no charge...no charge for parts, shipping, or repairs. If you don't that's certainly up to you.

I agree-
When I bought a new SD9VE it had some serious scratches on the top flat part of the barrel. I sent a picture and asked whether that was normal, or would happen with use. I said that if it would occur with normal use I would just leave it the way it was.

They told me to send the gun in and they refinished the barrel. No charge and 2-3 day service.

If I had a striker problem (or any other functional problem) I wouldn't hesitate to send my gun for analysis and repair.

Yes, it's a joke that you can't buy replacement parts for these guns still.

I bought parts off of ebay after S&W had my gun almost 3 months, I needed the sear block assembly.

They said parts were not available, so I had them send it back to me.

Have to send gun back to have striker assembly replaced, just sell me the part already.

I have the impression that on the SD series the relationship between the sear and striker assembly is critical. S&W has never said that but I get that impression from looking at several posts over time. Again, just an impression, nothing more.

Three months?

Was that long ago? I had mine back in 3 days.

Good thread. I only have about 500 round through my SD, love the way it shoots. Now if I have any issues with the striker assembly I know what to do. Thanks guys.

The SD and S&W pistols are as they are.
You want aftermarket Glock parts? Spend the extra $250-300 and get a Glock. Problem solved.
If I have a major issue with mine it goes to S&W for repair.
Easy peasy

Are these parts covered by any patents that would prohibit an aftermarket supplier from making a better one? The metal used in these strikers is suspect to say the least.

This is the classic reason to follow the Lt. Col. Evan Quiros procedure. Remember him? He was the real guy off whom Skeeter Skelton modeled the fictional character Dobe Grant decades ago.

Quiros got TWO Model 29s, just in case the first ever needed service. Service was a big deal back then. Remember when you had to use railway express, or some other type of SLOW transport to get your gun back to 2100 Roosevelt Avenue?

Now, service is an overnight or 2-day air shipment away, but the down time is inconvenient.

At the price of the SD, get two, "just in case one needs to go back for service."

:)

Do you not have a backup , you should have one.
A SD9ve at $299. or a G 19 at $539. would make a good back up :D

I have plenty of pistols. That's not my point. My point is that it's ridiculous to have ship an entire gun back for a non- FFL required part. Smith isn't going to change their policy just for me and that's fine. I just won't purchase anymore of their products.

Maybe they want to examine the gun to see just exactly what went wrong? You report a failure at a location not seen before in this forum.

I don't know anything about their policies other than what they did for me but the pattern I see from various posts is that they want to repair anything beyond the basic breakdown stage in their facility.

:)Don't you just love being an American in America ?
I find it very responsible of them to want to examine the pistol to see why yours failed , I stopped counting rounds at 3000 a year ago & mine still shoots same as it did new. If I do ever have a problem I will gladly send it back for a 10 days or 2 weeks cause I want my next S&W to be just a dependable as this one & the others I own have been.
Why yours failed or why you don't want to send it back ?
I am looking to get a bodyguard as soon as they are no longer sold out. :D

I told them I'd be more than happy to ship the old one back on my dime before they sent a replacement if they wanted to see what/how the striker failed. Striker failures have not been an unheard of occurrence with the SD and some M&P units.
I'll ship it back if that's what it takes to get the pistol in working order but the needless issue is that it is a gun that someone who shoots a lot cannot even keep wear parts on hand for should they fail. Strikers, extractors are just two examples of wear parts that should be able to be purchased and kept when needed. I don't see that as being unreasonable. I'll guarantee you that if you had to buy a set of brake pads for your Chevy and Chevy said "sorry. you'll have to send your truck back to the Ontario plant for that" you'd consider it unreasonable even if they were going to pay shipping plus the pads.
It's a $300 pistol so I should have expected this. I'll get it fixed and get it in the classifieds.

I don't want aftermarket parts, I want factory parts especially stupid stuff that's easy to change out.

I agree major problem send it bak and not so EASY PEASY IN MY CASE.

Thanks, 3
