SD9VE STRIKER BLUES

The reason these strikers fail is because they are a MIM part.

I will never dry fire mine again because of this reason.

Another thing that's funny is you talk to 1 person at S&W they will send you the part and another wants you to send gun back.

Striker

Probably about 1500 rounds through the gun. It does get some dry firing but I didn't consider it to be excessive. Broke on the portion that contacts the bar. Is there anyone that stocks replacements or is going through S&W warranty process my only option? I'd actually like to have a spare or two around.

Not a California gun?

If a CA gun when was it built?

If CA and brand new, look at the impression on a spent cartridge with a microscope for make, model, S/N.

I don't want aftermarket parts, I want factory parts especially stupid stuff that's easy to change out.

I agree major problem send it bak and not so EASY PEASY IN MY CASE.

Thanks, 3

Right. You would think the light would come on at S&W and they would realize a large number of shooters stay with Glock, CZ simply because factory parts are not restricted unless it's an FFL required part. I have 7 Glocks and for me their ergonomics are average at best but I keep them because I shoot a lot and factory parts are easy to get. I can also buy any CZ part needed to keep them running.
When the M&P series came out striker issues were quite common. Back then they were forged steel strikers and they still had issues with them so it all cannot be blamed on MIM parts.

Is it a California gun or a restricted gun from one of the other 4-5 states with special requirements?

Well S&W sent me a e-mail saying it was a "restricted" part and the whole gun would have to be sent back. I replied asking them by whom was it restricted since Glock strikers are dime a dozen anywhere on the net. If it becomes necessary for me to ship this whole gun back to get a striker it will be my first and last Smith.

It is probably not fair to judge the whole product line by its most economical component.

If you do send it back perhaps they will tell you why they won't just exchange that one part.

In looking at various archives I see that Glock had striker problems, S&W had striker problems on the M&P and other lines, so there may be a reason. If you find out please let us know what the issue is.

My remedy for years has been a range gun and a carry gun. The carry gun gets range tested until it proves 100% reliable with several hundred rounds of defense ammo. The range gun then gets the wear and tear on range outings. For the SD9 VE I also have a range only factory recoil spring assembly. It gets the wear and tear and during reassembly after cleaning following a range session a tested and proven but lightly used factory recoil spring assembly goes into the gun until the next range session. I also have range only magazines. Carry mags are tested and proven but again the range mags get the wear and tear. I use SW9 VE mags for the range since the different floor plates make it easy to differentiate between the two. It works well for me and so far with 10,000 plus rounds through SD9 VE's I've had no incidents although I did retire one recoil spring assembly when it started looking rough.

Best Regards,

Yes they were steel strikers but they were too thin in 2 areas.

They had too beef them up ( thicker ) so they would not break in those
areas.
